My sons Austin and Luke introduced me to SU so I decided to see what it produces for a 'good old boy' like me! Having been at it for a while it's been interesting - but there is so much 'stuff' out there! Where do you stop? And 'stop' you have to (now and then)!

Nothing is more important today than Peace - but how can individuals do their bit? Maybe this site opens up some realistic possibilities. I'm not saying this outfit has all the answers or has enough influence but we have to start somewhere. One thing I notice is that they base their argument on what level of defence does the UK need to defend itself. I feel we have a responsibility for the people outside our own Nation who need the support and defence capability of stronger Nations. After all that is what saved us and many other people from Nazi tyranny in the second world war. But they do argue that we need a stronger UN - and that I agree with. But that in itself poses the problem of the major powers finally learning to trust one another and let their national interests become subservient to the greater good of international peace. Now who said anything was ever easy!
But I'm not all starry eyed - there are bad people everywhere in every community and we see them killing their own for apparent sectarian reasons in Iraq and Palestine - and Africa, just like in the Balkans and even our own close-to-home Ireland, and many other places. It's these extremists we have to somehow overcome and control. I'm not sure you can make a good person out of a bad one, when they are as bad and evil as some of these people. But maybe. Whose to say? We can't give up. What we need, at least, is a strong organisation to really enforce peace where necessary. Up to now the UN and other peace-keeping forces have failed because they have not had the mandate or resources to defend the ordinary civilians when threatened by war lords and genocide. There are good people even in politics who are trying to make peace - but international politics and conflicting interests somehow always seem to get in the way.

I have an inherent scepticism and even cynicism BUT ...
I think maybe I should force open my mind and take more of a look into this site and what it seeks to achieve. Its objective to promote Peace and, it seems, individual personal tranquillity can't be bad and can't do any harm. My cynicism though makes me question the tenet that there is goodness in all of us. I would certainly like to think so - but I find it difficult to reconcile with the evil in the world - murderers, rapists, serial killers, child exploiters (or exploiters of any disadvantaged being) etc. Not to mention my own imperfections though I do believe I qualify as a 'good person' if not perfect - then who is perfect (or is that my cynicism breaking through again!)? But I am opening my mind and will try to make time to look deeper into this. We shall see...

I couldn't go back and watch this again - maybe you could? Either way you should, like me, just the once but I am afraid it could well stick in your memory. But that's no bad thing if it helps the world change. We are the World and from acorns big Oak Trees grow. Hopefully the same will apply with the New Year with an ever growing longing for finding the way to Peace in this World of ours.

This Video interview statement by a courageous Arab-American provoked a lot of thought at least on my part. We need to think about the problem of world conflict especially as confronts us all today in the form of Islamic terrorism (but we must not allow ourselves to think we do not have our own moments of historical shame and present forms of extremism). None of us are squeaky clean. We somehow all have to work together to make any progress toward Peace. It's can be hard enough in a family or local community - let alone the World!
Christmas Greetings to all and best wishes for Peace in the New Year!

Please stop by this BBC Action Network site and register support for Peace. I hoped the Title would sound catchy (sounding like 'Stop for Pete's sake') but so far no reaction.
