    Welcome to my center for self Promotion

    The purpose of this site is get samples of my work out onto the web in the hopes it will help me get published. And due to the nature of the web it will likely also serve as an outlet for me to rant and rave, or simply make quirky observances. So in the end it will probably promote my writing and me.

    Currently I am writing in my spare time, working on short stories and in the beginning stages of my first novel. This year has seen a lot of change for me. I got a story published, I created an ran the 2,996 project to memorialize the victims of 9/11, and, along with Jeni and her four kids, I moved from LA to Raleigh. It was her support and not-so-gentle prodding that got me to get off my ass and get this site up.

    If you like anything about the site, please pass the link along. The more people who hear about it, the better my chances in the long run.

    Seriously? I'm not very exciting, in fact, I can see your eyes glazing over right now as we speak. Wouldn't you rather go shopping at Amazon.com? Or watch some zany Google videos?

    Really? Well okay, here goes...

    I'm a 20, 30, 40 something year old woman with too much time on my hands. I enjoy visiting online porn sites and blogging about shocking circumstances. I also enjoy ranting uncontrollably about stupid people and use enough four letter words you could line your entire home with my profanity.

    HAHAHA, did you fall for that?? Did you perk up for just an instant and think, "Well ALL RIGHT!"

    Well, I'm sorry to disappoint you, but you won't find that kind of stuff here. No really, I'm not pulling your leg this time. The truth is, I'm married to a wonderfully patient, thoughtful, kind and generous man going on 17 years now and we have two (pre)teen sons ages 14 and 12. I have a B.S. in Professional Writing and I've been designing and maintaining websites for the past two years now. I dabble here and there in creative writing and it's my dream to see my name in print, somewhere, anywhere, before I die.

    I was born and bred in the heart of the Ozarks. I'm an introvert but can be an extrovert when the occasion arises. I love to read, write, camp, ride bikes, walk, spend time with my family, surf the web and make people laugh.

    I first heard about blogging through a geeky TV technology show and once I figured out how to set it up on my web space, I've been hooked ever since. I really enjoy reading other people's blogs and meeting so many interesting bloggers; I'm hoping I'll make a few good friends through this experience. (Be my friend?)

    The first rule of writing is: "Always keep your audience in mind" and that's exactly what I do. This blog contains snippets of my life, my writing and (hopefully) useful information for other parents out there. If you stick around long enough, you'll notice I keep a certain "schedule" of sorts as far as what I post. I respect my family and friends and will never post anything derogatory or offensive (I hope).

    Are Computers Causing us to "Cocoon" Ourselves?
    From the page: Several people wrote in response to an off-hand comment I made in last week's feedback section on computer glitches, mentioning that I rarely go to see a movie in the theater anymore, preferring to wait for it to come out on DVD so I can watch it in the comfort of my home. Some of those readers (including a theater manager!) wrote to argue that no home theater could offer the level of experience available in the theater, but most wrote to heartily agree that the advantages of the super big screen are outweighed by the high concession stand prices, ringing cell phones, crying babies and misbehaving teenagers who mar the movie-going experience.

    But one person pointed out that my (and many others') preference for staying home is part of a bigger overall trend to avoid going out in public whenever possible and "cocoon" ourselves in our homes. And this trend is certainly encouraged, aided and abetted by today's technology.

    I have to admit it's true, at least in my own life. Tom and I, and many others we know, have for the last several years put our money into creating a beautiful, functional home rather than on going out to eat, taking vacations, buying fancy cars and clothes and jewelry, etc. We have just about everything we want and need right here - so why ever leave? Few resorts can rival our own backyard, with the pool overlooking the lake, and we even have a remote control for the spa and pool heater - technology we wouldn't find at most hotels (or if we did, would pay dearly for). And the sound system in our bedroom is connected to speakers on the patio so we can listen to music of our own preference while we swim, rather than something chosen by hotel staff. A computerized sprinkler system keeps the lawn and flower beds watered and looking nice.

    Our home theater system may not have a screen that's as large as the one at the local Cinemark, but our sound system is better, we're closer to the screen, and we can pause the movie whenever we want and have whatever snacks we prefer while we watch instead of being limited to popcorn, hot dogs and candy.

    The technology extends to the kitchen. We don't have one of those refrigerators with a computer screen in the door, but it does notify us when the filter for the in-door water dispenser needs changing. The ovens (conventional and microwave) and other appliances are programmable so we can easily make great gourmet meals without paying those not-so-great restaurant prices. And when we don't feel like cooking, we can always order pizza online.

    We even work at home, so there are often times when we don't leave the house for days at a time. We save a ton of money on gas and mostly live in shorts and tee shirts from WalMart. Once again, it's technology that makes this possible: as tech writers, we conduct almost all our business over the Internet. We have an enterprise-level network in our home, with all our own web servers, mail server, DNS servers, etc. on site. And of course, there's a security system to protect all this from burglars.

    Some psychologists and sociologists have speculated that this sort of "cocooning" behavior accelerated after 9/11, but I think the trend started prior to that. Just as technology has made it easier for us to "hole up" in our homes, our high tech, high pressure world has also made life outside our homes more hectic and hassle-prone.

    Red-light cameras, computerized toll booths and fancy traffic control devices have made driving on increasingly crowded roads more of a chore. Surveillance cameras watching us everywhere we go has made going to the mall, bank, etc. less pleasant. Computerized "self service" checkouts that unfortunately often don't work properly, making us wait for a human to come intervene and taking extra time, makes shopping a task to be dreaded. Why venture out into all that when you can stay home and do much of your shopping, banking, bill paying and other business while sitting at your computer?

    Some express concern that we're becoming isolated and anti-social, but I don't think so. We have a far larger circle of friends now than we did in our pre- Internet, pre-homebound days. And those friends are scattered all over the world. We communicate with them on a daily basis, thanks to our technology. We exchange ideas, photos and videos, talk via IP phone calls and share in each others' lives far more intimately than

    I have lost the Magic

     I don't know what has happened? I was doing great with my writing and all of a sudden POOF! "I have lost the Magic" and I must tell you where I got the title for my writing today; it was from this article: An Act of Magic that I found captivating from start to finish. I feel my ability to write comes from the mood that I am in; when I am feeling good about Life the writing is easy; when I feel an emptiness towards Life, I can't seem to find the words to write.

    And it seems that every time that I read one of D. Challener Roe's articles I end up "Learning Something New" which is a definite plus. This time it was the definition of Tabula rasa:

    mind prior to experiences: the mind at birth, regarded as having no innate conceptions

    chance to start afresh: an opportunity to make a clean break or a fresh start

    With all the doubts that I have about my ability to write; don't hold your breath waiting for me to conger up a magical piece of writing that is going to enchant you. But still the possibility does exist, with a little imagination, some hard work and some confidence in myself, who knows what possibilities, might exist for me in the future?

    Ala Ka Zam! I have created a Blog entry for today and I didn't even think that I had anything to write about, it must be magic! I also wanted to congratulate D. Challener Roe for winning first place and Janine who came in second in the Writing Photo Contest Great job you two! Me doubting that "I have lost the Magic."

    What Makes "You" Unique?

    "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

    This doesn't sound like the right quote to start writing  about being Unique but the difference is in your rights by the Law (all men are created equal) and your rights to be the person that is "You." Do you know what a miraculous creation "You" are? There's not another person in the world that is exactly like "You," even if you were a twin and had the same DNA, (your finger prints would be different) your twin has their own mind and "You" have yours. It makes "You" who you are; your emotions, your thoughts, your personality are unique to only "You."

    I use the name My Unique Life for my web site because I believe that I am truly unique but so are "You." Tigger's Song from Winnie the Pooh proclaims that, "I'm the only one." Popeye proclaims his individuality with, "I yam what I yam, and that's all I yam." Being unique includes but isn't limited to these qualities: your Gifts, your Talents, your Attitude and most importantly who "You" think that you are. As a writer I think that we all want to create a persona that meets our goals of who we truly believe that we are in our heart and soul.

    To answer the questions in the Writing Photo Contest #1: I write in my Blog everyday to the best of my ability and I find that it's very therapeutic to me; it helps me to communicate my thoughts into writing. I have never learned how to write, like I want to, and you might find a lot of mistakes in my writing. But writing is something that I want to learn how to do and communicating my thoughts into writing makes me feel better.

    I prefer to write alone because I am easily distracted by other people. I also prefer to write in silence so that I can concentrate better on what I am trying to communicate in my writing. I don't wear a hat. I don't use a certain pen or pencil. As you can see in the photograph; I am sitting in the living room, with my laptop computer, in my favorite chair and dressed comfortably in a sleeveless shirt and stretch pants. I often find myself staring out the window trying to figure out how to word my thoughts so that you will understand what I am trying to say.

    I would like to Thank Write Stuff for prompting me with this Writing Photo Contest. I have wanted to write about this topic again for some time now and the prizes are great. But I feel I have already won the prize and that is expressing my thoughts to you in writing. I have written about being unique on several occasions and as D. Challener Roe's page title says this is a "Rough Draft." Me showing you a picture of me writing "What makes "You" Unique."

    Should Internet Services that can be used as Terrorist Tools be Shut Down?
    From the page: Over the last few years, I've read a number of news articles detailing how various web services have been or could be used by terrorists in plotting their attacks. The latest example was the claim that the terrorists who recently plotted to blow up the fuel tanks at JFK airport used Google Earth to pinpoint the coordinates and get aerial views of their target news.com.com/8301 [news.com.com/8301] - 10784_3-9725253-7.html). Some security experts have suggested that such services should be shut down or restricted to exclude locations that might be likely attack targets from their databases.

    Certainly none of us want to make it easier for terrorists to accomplish their missions - but I can't help wondering where an all-out effort to do away with everything that might aid the bad guys will lead us. After all, it's well documented that terrorists also use cell phones and email to further their plotting. Does that mean we should shut down those communications systems, as well?

    If you think about it, it's a slippery slope. Do you take away tools that have valuable legitimate uses by law abiding citizens just because criminals can use them to commit crimes? That's the premise of gun control laws, but in the U.S., those laws have had dismal success records. Do we really want to extend that philosophy to Internet sites and services?

    It's true that too much information can be a dangerous thing. I admit that sometimes I wish it weren't quite so easy for others to find information about me on the 'Net. It makes me uncomfortable that strangers with some Internet research savvy can find out where I live, especially considering the hate mail I sometimes get for expressing my opinions in these editorials and in other forums. On the other hand, I've used those very same research tools and techniques to locate long-lost family members and friends, thus enriching my life.

    In this country, we've always been willing to take some risks in the interest of freedom. For instance, you've long been able to find bomb-making instructions in most public libraries, but that hasn't led to an epidemic of homemade explosions - at least, not in the past. One might argue, though, that we're up against a different type of threat now, and that it has become necessary to restrict not only access to "dangerous" physical tools but also access to "dangerous" information. It's not an easy issue.

    It all comes down to a question of how far we're willing to go in pursuit of security. Would you be willing to have the web censored by the government, as it is in China and some other countries, in order to keep terrorists from obtaining information they could use to hurt us? Would you be willing to have all your email monitored by the government in the interest of catching terrorists?

    How about giving up paper money in favor of digital dollars and having all your financial transactions tracked and logged, so that the authorities can spot money transfers made by terrorists? What if the police "needed" to listen to all phone calls in order to catch criminals? Would you protest mightily or just grumble a little, or would you go along with it happily, if it's "for the children?" Would you support having mandatory GPS tracking devices on all cars, so they could always be located if necessary? What about surveillance cameras on all street corners - or even inside private buildings and vehicles? Drastic measures, sure - but it beats being blown up by terrorists. Or does it?
