Gore: `We Are Losing Badly' in the Climate-Change Battle
September 24, 2008.
From the page: "During a panel discussion at the annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative Wednesday, Gore criticized moves by Wall Street to repackage mortgages into securities and said those who burn dirty fuels will also feel pain in coming years.
"The current economic crisis was triggered, of course, by the sudden collapse of an assumption," Gore said. "The so called subprime mortgages were without collateral. The assumption was if you lump them together and securitize them -- that will reduce the risk.
"That assumption just went splat," he said. "Now is the time to prevent a much worse catastrophe because the world has several trillion dollars in 'subprime' carbon efforts based on the assumption that it's all right to put (tons) of carbon into the atmosphere."
Gore, heated at times, said the globe should stop burning coal and said called the idea of clean coal "a lie" likening it to the concept of "healthy cigarettes."
The environmentalist and Oscar-winner said economies need to "make a one-off investment" from infrastructures that depend on "fuel that is dirty and dangerous" to "a new global energy infrastructure that is free forever" using solar, wind and geothermal power.
He said corporations putting off expensive investments in alternative fuels were behaving like Wall Street executives that "just keep focused on the short-term profit."
Of the current fight against global warming, Gore said: "This is a rout. We are losing badly." He cited tropical diseases entering countries for the first time, and devastating hurricane activity as some of the recent consequences of climate change. "

Western states pitch plan to reduce greenhouse emissions -- Four Canadian provinces are also included in the initiative, which aims to cut regional emissions by 15% below 2005 levels.
By Margot Roosevelt, Los Angeles Times Staff Writer
September 24, 2008
From the page: "Seven Western states and four Canadian provinces proposed a sweeping regional crackdown on global warming emissions Tuesday in the face of continuing reluctance by the Bush administration and Congress to pass comprehensive climate legislation.
The Western Climate Initiative, endorsed by the 11 governors and provincial premiers, aims to slash regional greenhouse gas pollutants by about 15% below 2005 levels in the next 12 years."

Sunny Day For Solar
Andy Stone, 09.24.08, 2:20 PM ET
From the page: "Solar-generated electricity, long decried as too expensive to be practical, may have gotten a little closer to being competitive. The Senate on Tuesday approved its version of a bill that would extend income tax credits for the solar industry through 2016. "

The deniers are winning, but only with the GOP
Gallup polls indicate that Republicans are less likely to recognize global warming
Posted by Joseph Romm (Guest Contributor) at 10:09 AM on 20 Sep 2008
From the page: In short, a significant and growing number of Republicans -- one in eight as of 2008 -- simply don't believe what they know most scientists believe. That is quite alarming news, given that it is inconceivable the nation will take the very strong action needed to avert catastrophe unless it comes to believe what most scientists believe, namely that we are in big, big trouble and can delay no further.
