Obama Orders Higher Energy Efficiency Standards
Posted by Brian Montopoli
February 5, 2009
From the page: "President Obama today signed a presidential memorandum requesting the Department Of Energy to set higher efficiency standards for everyday household appliances.
"This will save consumers money, this will spur innovation, and this will conserve tremendous amounts of energy," the president said at an appearance at the Energy Department. "We'll save through these simple steps over the next 30 years the amount of energy produced over a two-year period by all the coal-fired power plants in America.
[...]
There are already laws on the books requiring new efficiency standards for household and commercial appliances, according to the Associated Press, but "they have been backlogged in a tangle of missed deadlines, bureaucratic disputes and litigation."
"Obama's intent is to say that legal deadlines must be met, with priority being given to those standards that are likely to yield the best pocketbook savings for consumers," the AP says.
The memorandum calls for new energy standards to be in place by August for items including commercial air conditioners, beverage vending machines, dishwashers, ovens and lamps. "
