NPR Health Blog: Consumers Union Wants Action On Health Overhaul
    By Maggie Mertens
    October 5, 2009

From the page: "Consumer's Union, which has an active consumer advocacy arm, is launching a TV ad in support of health reform. That's a first for a policy issue in the organization's 73-year history.

"Many Americans are one pink slip--or one major illness away--from losing their health coverage," says Consumers Union President Jim Guest in the TV spot. "Washington, the time for health care reform is now."

From the page: "Adding momentum to the revolt against the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, Apple on Monday resigned from the business group because of its opposition to federal efforts to limit greenhouse gases.

Apple is the fourth company and the largest, as well as the first tech company, to part ways with the chamber as the debate over global warming legislation heats up in Congress. It is also the most significant defector because Apple is a leading American brand and consumers strongly identify with its products."

Apple's Tablet to Take Over Textbooks, Magazines, Newspapers

From the page: "So Kindle seems to be bombing out among university students as a replacement for textbooks, at least in one trial run. But we mention that the Tablet from Apple could be a better solution since it is more interactive, and more familiar to anyone currently using an iPhone. And word on the street is that's just where Apple is headed with the new device, along with revolutionizing newspapers and magazines.

Brian Lam at Gizmodo has heard word that Apple is talking with McGraw Hill and Oberlin Press about moving textbooks to iTunes, something Apple has been working on doing with "several major publishing houses across several media." He also states he's heard rumor about the New York Times being approached by Apple about putting the paper on "a new device."

Proposed U.S. Carbon Cuts: All Bark, No Bite?
    By Bryan Walsh
    Thursday, Oct. 01, 2009

From the page: "For their part, more radical environmental groups, including Greenpeace, withheld support from the Boxer-Kerry bill -- as they did the House cap-and-trade bill -- arguing that its carbon cuts were far too modest to save the climate. Scientifically, they're probably right -- the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has said that developed nations like the U.S. need to cut carbon emissions 25 to 40% by 2020 to keep global warming within hopefully safe limits."

Boxer, Kerry Launch Campaign to Pass Senate Cap-And-Trade Bill
    By DARREN SAMUELSOHN of Greenwire
    Published: September 30, 2009

From the page: "Sens. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), John Kerry (D-Mass.) and nine Senate supporters kicked off the autumn global warming debate today with a campaign-style rally releasing their comprehensive climate bill.

    [...]

The Kerry-Boxer bill (pdf), the "Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act," comes in at 821 pages, starting with a mandate by 2020 to curb the nation's greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent from 2005 levels. It omits many details, leaving negotiations with Democrats and Republican moderates to fill in the blanks."

Grayson on `die quickly' quip: `I apologize to the dead'
    By Daniel Tencer
    Wednesday, September 30th, 2009 -- 5:59 pm

From the page: "On the House floor Tuesday night, Grayson caused a stir among opponents of health care reform when he said the Republican model for health care is "a very simple plan. Don't get sick. That's what the Republicans have in mind. And if you get sick in America, the Republican health care plan is this: die quickly."

House Republicans quickly issued demands for an apology, and on Wednesday Rep. Price tabled his motion to condemn the comment.

    [...]

"I apologize to the dead and their families that we haven't voted sooner to end this holocaust in America," a defiant Grayson said on the House floor Wednesday.

The "holocaust" Grayson was referring to was the 44,000 Americans that a recent study says die each year because of inadequate access to health care. The representative cited the Harvard study (PDF) in what appeared at first to be an apology, but quickly turned into a retort.

The number of dead "is 10 times more than the number of Americans who have died in Iraq and who died in 9/11," Grayson said. "But that was just once. This is every single year. That's right. Every single year."
