NEW YORK: The tally of failed banks in 2008 rose to 19 as the government announced that a Texas and a California bank had been shuttered.

Franklin Bank, a Houston, Texas-based bank and Security Pacific Bank, a Los Angeles, Calif.-based bank were shut down by state regulators, marking the 18th and 19th bank failures this year. Franklin Bank (FBTX) had total assets of $5.1 billion and total deposits of $3.7 billion as of Sept. 30, 2008, according to a statement on the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp.s Web site.

DUBAI: Dubai Aquarium and Discovery Centre in The Dubai Mall has clinched the Guinness World Record for the �World�s Largest Acrylic Panel�. The aquarium, which opens its doors to public on Tuesday is free to view for mall visitors.

Measuring 32.88 metres in width, 8.3 metres in height, 750mm in thickness and weighing 245,614kg, the acrylic viewing panel at Dubai Aquarium and Discovery Centre surpasses the current Guinness World Record holder, Churaumi Aquarium in Okinawa, Japan �" 22.5 metres wide x 8.2 metres high and 600 mm thick. The new record is expected to be featured in the upcoming edition of the Guinness Book of World Records in 2010.
