  • Installing Ubuntu Linux! | PCMech

From the page: "It's 100% free and always will be
    # Thousands of applications are immediately available and 100% free
    # No more virus, spyware, or malware hassles!
    # You want to learn something new (this was my reason)
    # It's cool
    # Why not?"

I installed Ubuntu on VMware just to try it out. I am not impressed. Unless it takes going back to Windows 3.1 to impress... All those 100% free apps are also available for Windows (Gaim, Firefox, Gimp, ad nauseum). I've never had a problem with malware (just a tiny bit of common sense takes care of it). Further more to install a program I had to hit up a forum; that's not to say I've not had to use resources to figure out how to do things in Windows, but that IS to say I haven't needed help doing a 'simple' install. Any computer I buy (unless I really try) comes with Windows, I know I'm still, technically, paying for it but it really doesn't hurt that bad.
It's not all bad though, I liked that codecs are automatically searched for when needed (you know the codecs that come with FREE Winamp, or Windows Media Player). I'll keep Ubuntu around though, and play with it for awhile, maybe some 'coolness' will rub off, I doubt it though.
