    Surviving V4
    Part Two: Extensibility
    The SU Editor by Onyxstone

The highly capable script-writers of the StumbleUpon community have written several scripts that make Version 4 of StumbleUpon more accessible and enjoyable. I'm going to concentrate on the SU Editor by Onyxstone in this post.

In order to install the SU Editor, you will first need to have the Firefox browser on your computer. You then will need to install the Greasemonkey add-on for Firefox. Then you will be able to install the SU Editor.

The SU Editor allows stumblers to create great-looking posts. Users need no knowledge of HTML, CSS, or any computer code. The SU Editor acts as a translator, allowing users to arrange their posts visually as the Editor handles the necessary code.

Perhaps the best way to exhibit the strengths of the SU Editor is to show you how this most useful script behaves in action.
With the Editor installed,  we would see the screen below when we click  the "Add a Site" button.

The extra menu bars belong to the SU Editor. The icons are straightforward, but if any functions are unclear, we need only to "hoover" the mouse over the icon in question--

--and a helpful "alt-text" box will appear explaining what that icon does.

To start using the Editor, we only need to start typing.

Then if we wish to make changes to the text formatting, we only need to use a click-and-drag with the mouse to highlight the text we wish to change--

---and then select and click a function from one of the menu bars above the text window.

In the case above, I selected the "Bold" function.  You can see the changes that you make to your text formatting as you make the changes, so no more guesswork!

    Surviving V4
Part Two: The SU Editor by Onyxstone  (continued)

Continuing the work that we started in the above review, we can now change the font size and the typeface of our text with the convenient drop-down menus available on the SU Editor's toolbars.

With the addition of some "text shadowing", we'll be done with the text. Now we can begin inserting an image into our post, and that's where the fun really starts! In the area of image sizing and positioning, the SU Editor simply shines. Find the "Create a new image from URL" button on the Editor's toolbar (it's circled in red in the picture below). Click it, and a dialog box will open. Just type (or paste) the URL of the image you wish to post ; place that URL in the box labeled "Image Source". (The "Image Source" box is circled in red in the picture at the lower left.) Note: Be sure to copy and paste a direct link to your image--DO NOT paste HTML code in the "Image Source" box!

Click "OK" in the brown dialog box, and our image will appear in the Editor's visual editing window. Now if we click anywhere on that image, eight small squares will appear at the border of the image. Those squares are image re-sizing points! Click-and-drag one of the points at the corner of the image. You will see that the SU Editor will both re-size the image, and will display the re-sized dimensions of the image in real-time as you drag the corner-point of the image:

On release of the left-click button of your mouse, the re-sized image will display. (And that image will maintain the proportions of the old image!) Now just click the "Boxify" button at the Editor's toolbar, and your post is ready. Just click the "Add a site" button. Even if the post fails to display correctly the first time, the SU Editor gives a user a second chance to get it right! Just click "Add a site" again, but when the Editor launches, click the "Restore" option.  You'll see a dialoge box open.   Simply click "Yes", and the last post you were working on will re-appear (woo-hoo!).

If you have experience with HTML and CSS, you may choose to tweak your post by toggling between the Editor's "Source" and "Visual" modes---

---but even if you have no experience with markup code, the SU Editor works so smoothly that it invites a user to play with the features offered. Just taking a peek at the source code that the Editor generates is interesting.

Onyxstone has worked very hard on this Editor, and her effort is evident in the smooth functioning of this wonderful add-on. She deserves a holiday, and a parade in her honor. I can't make that happen, but you do have my undying thanks, Onyx!

The WYSIWYG SU Editor by Onyxstone is an indispensable marvel, and it belongs in your browser!

  • Man Marries Virtual Girlfriend: SAL9000, Nene Anegasaki,...

      Eve from the movie Metropolis
      Science Fiction Can't Keep Up

Published in 1997, William Gibson's novel Idoru featured a romance between a man and a software construct.  The very idea of someone falling in love with a synthetic personality seemed far-fetched at the time.

Twelve years later, life imitates art as a blogger by the name of SAL 9000 marries his virtual girlfriend in Guam.  (Apparently, such things are legal in Guam.)

Well, SAL 9000, I'm compelled to offer two bits of advice for your wedding night.  Please ensure that your bride is disconnected from the power mains, and that all her capacitors are at zero voltage.  Safety first!

      "Ghost Detectors" on their website.
What's next? Will Pfizer soon be offering leeches?
Will Ashai Optical offer screeing mirrors? Doc, stuff like this must be debunked, so thanks for the send!

    Surviving V4
    Part One: Navigation and Posting

      A) Navigation:
      How do I...

A1. Get back to the old Stumbleupon?
Click the word "Settings" located at the upper right side of your screen. On the right side of the screen that opens, you'll see a message--"Missing Something? / Switch now!" Click the "Switch now" link, then on the next screen that opens click the "Your Home" link at the left side of that screen's navigation bar.

(Picture A1)--The "Settings" link is circled in yellow.

A2. Get to my public profile?
Click the "Favorites" tab just below the Stumbleupon logo at the upper left side of your screen. In the "Favorites" screen at the far right, you will see a sidebar with your profile's name and picture. Click either your name or picture to see your public profile.

A3. Find the list of recent shares sent to me?
Click on the "Favorites" tab just below the StumbleUpon logo, then click the "Shares" option on the submenu bar. That submenu bar is located just below the yellow "Stumble" button.

    Photobucket

(Picture A3)--The "Discover" tab is circled in yellow, and the "Shares" option is circled in green.

A4. Find the Groups and Forums in V4?
Serinadruid had the answer to that question. The easiest path to your groups is via the toolbar.
At the toolbar, click on the "Tools" option. A dialog box will appear:

(Picture A4.1)--The "Tools" option is circled in red.

In the dialog box, click the checkbox beside "Groups" and then click the "OK" button.

(Picture A4.2)--The "Groups" checkbox is circled in red, and the ''OK" button is circled in green.

After you have clicked the "OK" button, a small icon should appear on your toolbar. You then may click on that toolbar icon to access the Stumbleupon groups and forums.

(Picture A4.3)--The newly installed "Groups" toolbar icon is circled in green.

      B) Posting:
      How can I...
      B1. Post a review?
Click "Favorites" on the main navigation bar just below the Stumbleupon logo. Once in the "Favorites" screen, you may select from the following options in the submenu bar: "All", "Photos", "Videos", or "Discoveries". With one of the former options selected, you need only hoover you mouse over the link that you wish to review. That link will highlight and three options will appear: "Edit", "Share", or "Delete". Select "Edit", and a box will open. You can then type your review in that box.

      B2. Make a blog post?
Click "Favorites" on the main navigation bar just below the Stumbleupon logo. In the "Favorites" screen, click on the "Add a site" button located above the submenu bar and just to the left of the sidebar. When the editing box opens, check the "Blog mode" box by clicking on it. (You need not enter a URL for a blog post.)

    Photobucket

(Picture B2)--The "Favorites" tab is circled in yellow, the "Add a Site" button is circled in blue at the right, and the "Blog Mode" checkbox is circled in green.

Copy and paste and pass this around--

      Steal this post.

Write me if this post is in error and I will correct it.
It's really best to get acquainted with this V4 interface before the change becomes mandatory.
I'll write about Firefox add-ons in V4 later.

  • The Soul Cages - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rated Nov 22 1 review jazz, music, pop, albums wikipedia.org

First released in 1991, Sting's album The Soul Cages remains his most consistent, and arguably his best album. Sting wrote these songs soon after his father's death. Themes of death, grief, and entrapment reverberate throughout the set. "Pop" music usually shies away from such difficult terrain, but the strength of Sting's songs compel a listener to walk with him as he crosses the jagged land of bereavement. Earlier on this page I lamented the demise of audio albums. The Soul Cages stands as a reminder of just how important an album can be.

    The Jeremiah Blues part 1

It was midnight, midnight at noon
    Everyone talked in rhyme
Everyone saw the big clock ticking
Nobody knew, nobody knew the time

    Elegant debutantes smiled
    Everyone fought for dimes
    Newspapers screamed for blood
It was the best of times

Every place around the world it seemed the same
Can't hear the rhythm for the drums
Everybody wants to look the other way
When something wicked this way comes

Sometimes they tie a thief to the tree
    Sometimes I stare
    Sometimes it's me

    Everyone told the truth
All that we heard were lies
A pope claimed that he'd been wrong in the past
    This was a big surprise

    Everyone fell in love
    A cardinal's wife was jailed
The government saved a dying planet
    When popular icons failed

Every place around the world it seemed the same
Can't hear the rhythm for the drums
Everybody wants to look the other way
When something wicked this way comes

Sometimes they tie a thief to the tree
    Sometimes I stare
    Sometimes it's me
