3:19am (1 review) stumblers, immortality, the-question http://dobedobedo.stumbleupon.com/review...- Immortality is not a gift, and I do not want it.
Here are three reasons why I don't: First, I just might be afflicted with the sort of immortality suffered by Tithonus in Greek myth. For Tithonus, "immortality was granted, but not eternal youth. Tithonus indeed lived forever but grew more and more ancient, eventually turning into a cricket, a classic example of the myth-element of the Boon with a Catch."
Second, even without a catch, earthly immortality can not heighten the experience of our days, but can only deaden our senses with an infinite procession of ever-more-similar suns and moons. To begin his short-story "The Immortal", Jorge Luis Borges quotes Francis Bacon: "Salomon saith, There is no new thing upon the earth. So that as Plato had an imagination, that all knowledge was but remembrance; so Salomon giveth his sentence, that all novelty is but oblivion." Borges then tells the tale of an immortal Roman soldier named Marcus Rufus. Rufus is so weary of life that he quests to drink from a legendary "River of Death" so as to finally find rest. Indeed, if I live my life fully, then I will be ready for death the same way that I'm ready for sleep after a full day's work.
Lastly, all the children in my family can never emerge from the shadow of their elders, can never become fully independent and free unless I and all the elders of my family die and get out of their way.
No, immortality is not for me. --Chris

Jul 3, 8:48am (1 review) soul-music, music, albums http://user.adme.in/blog/browse/u/imall4... -Off The Wall- Michael Jackson
Thriller may have put him over the top, but I still think that Off The Wall is Michael Jackson's best album. Every track radiates danceable energy with the exception of one. Now that we know how his story ends, She's Out of My Life sounds strangely foreboding.
Rest now, Michael.

What is a tree made of? As a child I had wondered what material made up the bulk of a tree. With only a child's understanding to guide me, I assumed that a tree drew most of its mass from the soil, but that assumption was wrong. Not until 9th grade would I learn better, and what I learned remains a source of reverent fascination for me.

In class our teacher introduced us to Jan Baptist van Helmont (above). He was a mystic and an alchemist, but his fascination with the "new learning" of the 15th century pushed his work past alchemy and into the new science of chemistry. In fact, he is credited with coining the word "gases" as distinct components of air.
In a famous experiment conducted over five years, Helmont sought an answer to the question, "What is a tree made of?"
Using a kiln, Helmont dried all the water out of 200 pounds of soil. He then placed the soil in a pot and planted a 5 pound willow sapling in the soil. Keeping the pot covered with a "skirt" in order to control his experiment, he then added only water to the pot for the next five years.

At the end of five years, Helmont removed the willow from the soil. Again the soil was dried, and both soil and willow were weighed. The willow had gained just over 164 pounds, but the soil had lost only two ounces. Helmont concluded that the bulk of the willow was formed from water.
Oddly, the man who coined the word "gas" failed to think that trees "breathe", thereby synthesizing water and CO2 in order to grow. Those discoveries would belong to latter scientists.
Today, when I reflect on the fact that our towering cottonwood in the back yard is made of only a seed, water, air, sunlight, and time, a wordless joy and awe well up in me. I'm grateful for all that lives, all we have learned, and all we will learn.
Breakthroughs in our knowledge of photosynthesis are at the "Discovery Milestones" link.

Jun 27, 10:21pm (1 review) music, albums http://user.adme.in/blog/browse/u/imall4... -Let the Truth Be Told- Laura Izibor
Laura Izibor is the best new contemporary R&B singer that I have heard this year. Haters might say that she sounds too much like Lauren Hill, and that I love her just because she's Irish, but the haters would be wrong. Just by her debut, I know this woman has a great R&B album in her. You'll find some crappy YouTube footage from someone's cellphone at the link, and even in that limited presentation Izibor commands attention. Keep an ear cocked for Ms. Laura!
