Howard is a guy from Sunnyvale, California, USA

After teaching 7 years at one of the "worst" public high schools in L.A., I am now a founding member of the history department at King's Academy, Amman, Jordan. "To know what is right and not to do it is the worst cowardice."

In March, 2005, the second-worst school shooting in U.S. history (at that time) occurred in Red Lake, MN. Like those killed at Virginia Tech, the victims were mostly students. Unlike those at Virginia Tech, the victims and their families received no condolences, or even a comment, from our so-called President. Perhaps he was too busy offering his expert opinion on the medical condition of Terri Schiavo. Or perhaps he just didn't give a shit about these particular murdered children, who all happened to be Native Americans.

Here is the result of the Christian right's assault on science. The U.S., formerly the undisputed world leader in technological development, has fallen to #7, behind Denmark, Sweden, Singapore, Finland, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. This is where "intelligent design" has gotten us. This is what happens when politicians like Bush impose their faith-based fantasies on the research institutions of a once-great nation. When many of my fellow Americans want our schools to teach superstition rather than science, when they think the Bible is a better explanation than evolution, when they refuse to accept incontrovertible facts like global climate change... well, we deserve this. And as a teacher with some idea of the educational state of our children, I can say we have a lot worse yet to come.

We pissed off the world by destroying a country much weaker than ourselves, we gave up the legitimacy we once had as a champion of human rights, we proved that our incompetent and warlike ways are a threat to every other nation on the planet--and now we are losing the technological edge we were counting on to defend ourselves from a world fed up with our bullying and arrogance. Way to go, Republicans.

The brazenness with which Republicans lie, cheat, steal, and in every other way betray their so-called "Christian morals" is breathtaking. It should be obvious to everyone by now that conservatives could never win a vote or an argument based simply on the merits--thus the deception and propaganda.

These guys are truly Hitlerian (and I do not say that lightly). Like the Nazis before them, they have made a deliberate choice to exploit the weaknesses of the democratic system by spreading misinformation and playing on people's fears and prejudices. They have hijacked our country and are leading it in the same direction the Nazis led Germany--toward war, genocide, murder, kidnapping, torture, and all-around evil. As Hermann Göring said,
Naturally the common people don't want war.... But after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine policy, and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship.... All you have to do is to tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.
If that sounds familiar, maybe it's because "exposing the country to danger" is interchangeable with "emboldening the terrorists."
