From Guardian:"Kurt Vonnegut, the satirical novelist who captured the absurdity of war and questioned the advances of science in darkly humorous works such as ``Slaughterhouse-Five'' and ``Cat's Cradle,'' died Wednesday. He was 84.

Vonnegut, who often marveled that he had lived so long despite his lifelong smoking habit, had suffered brain injuries after a fall at his Manhattan home weeks ago, said his wife, photographer Jill Krementz. "

  • You Grew Up Playing Shootem-Up Games. Why Cant Your Kids?

    Rated Apr 08 2007 5 reviews video games wired.com

From the page: "I was playing a round of Gears of War, trying to redo a level on "insane" mode, and the walls were painted with guts. I slaughtered my way to the boss, revved up my chainsaw, and sliced into his chest -- releasing a fractal fountain of gore. Woo!

At that instant, I heard the front door to my apartment open, and in walked my nanny ... with my 15-month-old son, his eyes agog. Daddy, I could see him thinking, what are you doing?

Oh, nothing, son. Just kicking back with a mass-murder simulator. That's all!

So I hastily clicked off my Xbox 360, and avoided the nanny's eyes. But it got me thinking: Eventually he's going to want to play video games. And then I'll have to face the traditional child-rearing quandaries that games present. When will I hand him his first controller? Will I let him play the gory combat games I love so much -- and, if so, when?"

An interesting article on computer games and kids.

From the page:" New EU rules on supplements have made big headlines and attracted vocal opposition. Barbara Lantin sifts fact from fiction and explains how consumers will be affected

If you are among the 43 per cent of the population who take vitamins, minerals or other food supplements, you may well be feeling a little alarmed and confused. On August 1, the European Food Supplements Directive takes effect. From then, the only vitamins and minerals that can be sold in Britain will be those on a list of permitted substances, or those for which an application to be added to this "positive" list has been made."

  • In EMI-ITunes Deal, the Big Loser May Be Microsoft

    Rated Apr 03 2007 2 reviews music wired.com

From the page: "When music label EMI announced Monday that it would offer high-quality digital music downloads free of copy protection, Apple CEO Steve Jobs basked in the early public relations glow, thanks to his canny call a month ago for the labels to abandon digital rights management technologies.

But while Apple scored a public relations coup by offering EMI's DRM-free tracks through iTunes, the company has also struck a major blow against Microsoft in a less obvious arena: music encoding standards"

It's time for non DRMed music stores. But this is the firststep, I'll be waiting to see whether price fall below 1$

From the page: "According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, women in their 20's and early 30's now account for a fifth of all Botox and chemical peel procedures. A quarter of 18-to-24-year-old women are contemplating cosmetic surgery in the near future.

Afraid to age, they urge plastic surgeons to treat them like they treat their decades-older counterparts.

Ashley Lavanty, 22, started getting Botox injections at 21.

"I don't have any wrinkles but the reason I want to do it is to prevent them from forming to avoid later surgery," she said. "My plastic surgeon said I really didn't need it. He didn't see the point in doing it, but … he did it because I insisted." [...]"

I had a girlfriend who was shy to smile because she thought smiling generates wrinkles. I tried to tell her showing emotions is preferable than a smooth face without emotions. Now this post says young women prefer a disabled face without wrinkles. Hope ı won't have anything to do with them :)
