This is Stalingrad (Volgograd), WWII.
The fountain is prominent towards the beginning of the film "Enemy at the Gates" about the Battle for Stalingrad. The two hero snipers take cover in it to shoot Germans.
It taken down after the war, and stood in what is now a car park outside th e train station. The building in the background in the photo is (I think) a department store.
Can anyone tell me the fountain's name, what the statue actually *symbolises* (ie is it political or just a folk tale or nursery rhyme), and what became of it.
But otherwise, I just wanted to share a really quite creepy photo. :D
