These are the letters from Egan to his beloved Sophia. The translator was unable to ascertain dates for these letters. Some letters were never mailed, but stayed in a small locked box that Egan kept over the long years.
My beautiful and blessed Sophia -
Merry Christmas my precious love, Merry Christmas.
Do you remember that first Christmas my beloved, just you and me and a warm fire on a cold and snowy morning? For dinner we had that dry, tough goose I had shot and rice dressing with some broccoli you had grown in your winter garden and it was the most beautiful meal I have ever had. After dinner we exchanged gifts - you gave me the sweater you knitted for me and I gave you the wooden hair piece I carved for you.
Time passes, but that day is one that will never be forgotten, the first Christmas we shared together in love. That afternoon, you carried us through town to visit the old people who might be alone and, even though you didn't know that I saw, you cried. When we made it home you went to your sewing room and I heard you crying for them, the love in your heart pouring out to the less fortunate my love. And the next year when Christmas came, you had baskets put together for every old person in our little town and food baskets for everyone who might need a little help, you are a saint.
Maybe Santa does indeed have little helpers; maybe you are one of them. All I know is there are many children whose belly will be full because of you this Christmas and many families will be off the streets because of the love you have for those who need help. They are blessed by your life and I am blessed by your love. You are one of the most exceptional women I have ever known.
Merry Christmas Sophia, Merry Christmas and I love you so very much.
Upon a night in a summertide
You rose from the misty sea
From those dwelling among
Ancient rocks seeking only me
Taking my hand before the eyes of God
Sealing our love forever It is written in the stars
As He took our fate and carved it solid
On the smallest grain of sand
And it was for you,
You, that this world was created
And it was for you,
You, He spoke, Let it be!"
And it was for you, You,
the light and the darkness
And the firmament and oceans and beasts.
It was with you,
You, in mind
He crafted this world
And it was for me,
only me,
That He crafted you.
awakening dreams breathe life
upon doves wings
trembling gently upon night's fog
cooing
becomes your breath upon my chest
tangerine punctuates your heart's beat
and sweeps over my soul
as our spirits join hands rising upward
... together
