The Canon HV40 comes from a rich heritage of MiniDV/HDV camcorders. While the HV40 is not a revolutionary release, it does continue the legacy by adding to the great quality of the HV30. The major new feature is the addition of 1080/24p frame rate. This mode is a welcome addition for those who want to shoot in cinema mode. 1080/30p is also still supported.

Running on a full HD mode of 60fps (frames per second); this compact camcorder captures smooth motion and clearer videos. With Sanyo's proprietary CMOS technology, the Sanyo VPC - FH1 HD 1080p records at full 60 frames per seconds, having the ability to capture bigger frame rates, producing clearer and better images. The VPC- FH1 also features 16x Advanced Optical Zoom for video which increases the view into at least 44mm. The photo zoom capability is 10x Optical Zoom with an F=35.7-357mm range (35mm equivalent). Zooming capability sports a 10x optical zoom (photos)/16x optical zoom (video). Although, you still have to use a glide cam or a steady fixed position apparatus when zooming. Another feature is that you can take still photos during playback or even during recording. Still photos taken are good for printing with 8 megapixel resolution which you can still interpolate to up to 12 megapixels. The Sanyo VPC - FH1 also features a 12 Subject Face Technology that allows and optimizes focus on the subjects. Taking pictures makes it a breeze with its sequential shooting of up to 12 frames per second. The 3 inch LCD monitor worked out an enjoyable video playback.

The camcorder market is currently in a transition. MiniDV has dominated the camcorder market for over a decade, but that stronghold is beginning to weaken. Flash memory camcorders, hard disk camcorders, and optical media camcorders are all aiming to take MiniDV's place as the king of the camcorder. Still, MiniDV is not dead yet, so which one should you buy?
