From the page: "U.S. District Judge Thelton Henderson of San Francisco disagreed in 2005, and the appeals court affirmed his judgment [on leukemia caused by exposure to Agent Orange] Thursday with some harsh words for the VA.

"Three different Congresses in three different decades have enacted legislation signed by three different presidents, designed to ensure the payment of such benefits to veterans afflicted with Agent Orange-related ailments, Circuit Judge Stephen Reinhardt wrote for himself and circuit judges John Noonan and Milan Smith.

"'What is difficult for us to comprehend is why the Department of Veterans Affairs, having entered into a settlement agreement and agreed to a consent order some 16 years ago, continues to resist its implementation so vigorously, as well as to resist equally vigorously the payment of desperately needed benefits to Vietnam War veterans who fought for their country and suffered grievous injury as a result of our government's own conduct.'"

From the page: "What is the NPAT?
The National Political Awareness Test is a key component of Project Vote Smart's Voter Self-Defense system. Major leaders of the media, major parties and Project Vote Smart repetitiously ask candidates one central question: "Are you willing to tell citizens your positions on the issues you will most likely face on their behalf?" The NPAT is administered to all candidates for presidential, congressional, gubernatorial, and state legislative offices.

The National Political Awareness Test (NPAT) asks candidates which items they will support if elected. It does not ask them to indicate which items they will oppose. Through extensive research of public polling data, we discovered that voters are more concerned with what candidates would support when elected to office, not what they oppose. If a candidate does not select a response to any part or all of any question, it does not necessarily indicate that the candidate is opposed to that particular item."

From the page: "No longer does the federal government merely arm the U.S. Marshall's service, the Secret Service, the FBI, the Border Patrol, DEA, BATF and the military. Today the IRS, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, EPA, the Forest Service and even the Small Business Administration are carrying firearms. In the deadly incidents of over-reaction at Ruby Ridge and Waco, hardly a flak-jacketed bureaucrat paid any meaningful price. Expanding the power of federal agencies to use force against U.S. citizens means the possibility of another Ruby Ridge or Waco are increasing. Every state can cite instances in which bureaucrats armed to the teeth are conducting military style operations. To the Founding Fathers, a federal police force was unthinkable, and individual citizens were advised to keep and bear arms. Thomas Jefferson said, "No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms...as a last resort to protect themselves against tyranny of government.""

Seen variations of this theme for quite a while, but am compelled to finally comment. This is especially timely, considering that my family is very Irish (still have many relatives living in Ireland), and my husband is a redhead. Other than that he bears zero resemblance to the shirtless hayseed in overalls...

Recently a long-time family friend who is of Native-American ancestry had referred to him as an "Irish wetback." Of course I was startled upon hearing this and asked our friend for an explanation. This brings us back to the tone of the comic. I couldn't help but to state that my and my husband's forebears came to this country in a legal manner, well-doccumented, and on a ship. Still, most of us non-NA's had little say in being born here generations after-the-fact. ;oD Perceptions are funny things.
