I may be one of the few who feels just as connected online as off. From the page: "If bloggers and techies would rather meet in person, what chance is there for the rest of the world to prefer electronic meetings?

Don't get me wrong, I love to IM, SMS, Twitter and blog more than most, and in person I am extremely shy at introducing myself, but even for me there is something special about actually seeing someone in the flesh and spending time with human beings. I doubt very much the people attending Blog World are there purely for the content.

When you meet someone in person you feel more connected. Those connections form faster and last long after the event. I ā€oeknow” lots of people purely online but those relationships are a far more slow burn thing, even if it is easier to stay in contact that way.

I believe as our lives become more and more moderated by technology the need to have real world contact will become even more important."

If you do not yet know what scalability means I urge you not to wait until your store or blog goes down to find out. Unless you're highly technical, you need someone else who knows what to do to make sure your site stays up if something you write goes viral or your store gets mentioned on Oprah or is featured on the Buzz page somewhere.

From the page: "Link baiting is a proven form of attracting valuable and search algortihm friendly organic links to a site with thought provoking material, news or an incredible offer. Sometimes a well written article or blog post, or a `giveaway' can result in tens of thousands of visitors in a day, along with organic links from their blogs or social news sites and forums. But what happens when your link bait is too good?

I was reading through DigitalPoint forums last night and found this account of excellent link (or traffic) bait, but an unprepared hosting account, which led to the site being booted off of its server."

Have you seen this feature at LinkedIn that lets you know who is hiring? Even if you aren't interested that is a great way for your job postings to go viral and for you to help someone else you know who may be interested.

I don't use LinkedIn very often and am not very active there so I see something new every time I log in. LinkedIn is the best social networking site I am aware of for "meeting" managers, executives, and consultants doing business in the Fortune 500 and traditional brick-and-mortar world.

They have an Answers offering where you can get some very high quality feedback provided your question fits their user profile demographic. (Easy to get to - major tab for it.)

It is also a good place to find the type of information someone would have on their resume so you know who to recommend to whom.

From the page: "People in your network are hiring:

    * PPC / SEO Campaign manager at Refreshed Media Ltd
    * Head of Web Development (PHP / .NET) at Refreshed Media Ltd
    * Senior Corporate Financial Analyst at Network Appliance"

    Awesome!

From the page: "Creating a strong personal brand through tactics such as blogging, volunteering, and speaking is a good idea, but creating a strong personal brand by following your dreams is a much better idea. A few weeks ago I got an email from Hunter Weeks that read:

    Hi Neil,

I learned about you on Workbook Project. There was a link to one of your postings. I'm intrigued by your message and enjoyed reading a few of your posts. I feel I'm living and creating a path similar to that you prescribe.

I've got an interesting plan I'm unveiling in regards to distributing my first film - 10 MPH. We've already been very successful with distribution, but want to make it much more widely available. This product/idea/phase of life/work is merely a stepping stone of what's to come. Currently, we're getting ready to launch our next film - 10 Yards in a big festival next year."

From the page: "social networks lose value once they go beyond a certain size. "The value of a social network is defined not only by who's on it, but by who's excluded," says Paul Saffo, a Silicon Valley forecaster. Despite their name, therefore, they do not benefit from the network effect. Already, social networks such as "aSmallWorld", an exclusive site for the rich and famous, are proliferating. Such networks recognise that people want to hobnob with a chosen few, not to be spammed by random friend-requests.

This suggests that the future of social networking will not be one big social graph but instead myriad small communities on the internet to replicate the millions that exist offline. No single company, therefore, can capture the social graph. Ning, a fast-growing company with offices directly across the street from Facebook in Palo Alto, is built around this idea. It lets users build their own social networks for each circle of friends.

So are Facebook and its graph really worth many billions? From an advertiser's point of view, says Rishad Tobaccowala, the boss of Denuo, the new-media unit of Publicis Groupe, an advertising company, Facebook is so far anything but the new Google. The search giant does have traditional network effects in its advertising system, he says: it aggregates advertisers and sends them to potential customers who have expressed specific intentions by typing search queries. But Facebook has only "large crowds who are communicating without expressing specific interests", says Mr Tobaccowala. On Google, advertisements are valued; on Facebook they are an annoyance that users ignore."

From the page: "there's no question in my mind that this integration is the tip of the iceberg. The outcomes are several:

    1. Social networking applications will grow into a kind of "smart address book" that aggregates our knowledge about and contact with the people we care about.

    2. The social network operating system will require interoperability between many applications that touch on our connections to other people, and our knowledge about them.

    3. There will be many niches, ranging from managing contacts among a group of friends or people with common interests, or managing contacts among people at an event (a la Crowdvine), to mass scale outreach, and eventually, to a kind of CRM 2.0 for corporate outreach. (To this latter point, some people have compared MySpace to Facebook by saying that MySpace isn't really a social network so much as it's a way for bands to connect with their fans. But that's a great use-case for social networking, as MySpace's deal with Sony (announced earlier today) demonstrates. There will be many use cases! Don't get trapped into thinking that today's use cases represent an end point.)

Here's the meat of the announcement, from the press release: " (on the site) social-net
