Wow Andy. I am so glad to have you as my friend. Everyone has GOT to READ THIS. And subscribe to Wendy's blog while you're there so you don't miss future installments of her wisdom. It is stupendous!

From the page: "I feel a little bad that I let Google rent so much headspace in the last few days that I posted my first ever mad rant today. I wrote it on Saturday and even let it sit for a while before hitting publish in the hopes I could tone my anger down... I failed. ;)

Which brings up an issue that definitely can affect productivity - what do you do when you are having a really bad day? How do you turn things around when you are having a really hard time getting your game face on?

Like today. No game face here.

Well, what I really need to be doing is 1 :: asking myself better questions, and 2 :: focusing on what will move me forward rather than what's holding me back.

So I will do that today as part of Monday Motivation.

Old question :: How can I get Google back?

New question :: How can I diversify my own traffic sources to lower Google's percentage of referral traffic from 28% down to less than 10%?"

  • The Truth Behind Why Google Checks Bounce

    Rated Nov 11 2007 3 reviews banking, google seroundtable.com

Now THAT makes a lot more sense and doesn't surprise me in the least. Banks are among the most challenging to get information out of and the last to spend money on new technology. When I went to work for IBM in 1977 I worked in a bank that was still using a MECHANICAL calculating machine. (One that you have to pull a handle up and over instead of pushing the enter button.)

From the page: "A long WebmasterWorld thread had a recent report of a bounced check. This time the forum members and I were not going to let this go. We kept grilling the person who reported the issue to bug the bank and get more details. After dozens of calls and speaking with several people at his bank, he found out the true reason as to why the check was "bounced."

In fact, the check was fine and should have been cleared into the account. However, the bank thought that this individual, who happens to deposit a check from Google very month, was defrauding the bank and Google.

A woman at National City Bank named Rachel, told the bank customer, that several individuals have tried to cash fraudulent Google checks at National City. Due to this, the bank put a hold on the check and told him that it bounced. Again, this individual has been an AdSense publisher for two years and has been depositing Google checks at that bank for 18 months.

I suspect this is much more likely a reason for a Google check to "bounce," when compared to Google not having the necessary funds in their bank account."

From the page: "Today, Google formally announced the release of Google Android, an interface that will be completely open source in almost every way imaginable. Cellphones have always been hindered to a degree by their closed interfaces (see the iPhone's war against the hackers), which was a calculated move by the designers and carriers to ensure that top dollar had to be paid for exclusive, cutting edge designs. Even where technology of cellphones far outpaced what we are used to in the states in countries such as Japan and Korea, for example "the ability to improve the device you've been using to call your friends, take pictures, browse the web and listen to music remained elusive."

You've heard that taking the time to "sharpen the axe" will increase productivity? Learning how to search more effectively is well worth investing time in learning. It will greatly speed up how long it takes to find anything online. This is a site wiep recommended for learning that very important skill. wiep.stumbleupon.com [wiep.stumbleupon.com]

From the page: "Search Engines. You got to love `em! The time they save us from having to search through various books, magazines, newspapers, media guides, etc. They have blessed us with more time to be lethargic and lazy in front of our flat screen computer monitors, but that's another post all in itself.

Have you ever taken the time to think about a Search Engine's Query? Is there an easy way to monitor links to your site through these queries? How advanced can "searching" really get? Within this post I will show how Google, Yahoo and MSN have created "shortcuts" for their Search Engines."

I keep saying Google is Broken and many keep telling me I am crazy. I'm telling you it is REALLY broken. One thing many don't realize is it ASSUMES - and you know what happens when we ASSUME - that if no one else logs into anything Google that any searches are YOU.

To make that clearer, say you visit your sister the Internet newbie who has no Google accounts and while you're there you check your g-mail or Adsense account or whatever. If no one ever logs into anything Google on that account, Google assumes it is STILL YOU.

Test this for yourself. Log into anything Google. Log out. Maybe even shut down. Take a vacation. Come back. Do some searches and look at your history.

From the page: "It Is Not Based Upon My Search History

I have actually just taken screenshots, and the history is probably on my HDD somewhere if I need proof. I am almost always logged into Google when I am searching, unless I am testing something.

Glancing at the drop down list available from the personal results button, I can see that maybe only 10% of the content I would look on as being relevant to anything I have searched for in the past, and none of it is relevant to my IP address."

Hmmm. Interesting find. Google recently said our belief that they charge advertisers one penny more than the next bidder was a "common misconception" (see wolf-howl.com/google/google-adwords-more-pricing-bs/ [wolf-howl.com/google/google-adwords-more-pricing-bs/] ) so perhaps this is another point we are mistaken on?

From the page: "Thursday, October 11, 2007 - Google no longer claims AdWords/AdSense doesn't influence the natural results - Was answering a question last night and went to reference a page I've pulled up many times in the past. At one point that page said:

"Will participation in AdWords or AdSense affect my listing in Google's free search results?
Google's advertising programs are independent of our search results. Search results display on the left side of our results page; ads appear on the right and in the colored box at the top.

Participation in an advertising program doesn't positively or negatively affect inclusion or ranking in the Google search results. Inclusion and ranking are free services; we don't accept payment to expedite inclusion or improve a site's ranking for particular keywords. To learn more about how Google ranks pages, please visit google.com/technology/index.html [google.com/technology/index.html] "

    Now that page says:

"We're sorry, but the information you've requested cannot be found. Please try searching or browsing the Help Center."

Here's the original page in Archive.org

Looks like the same fate for the UK help page as well.

So there you have it, participating in a Google advertising program might ( or might not;-) ) help your natural listings."

It is NOT just me who sees what is going on with Google AdWords. Yes, some advertisers are still making money; however, this comment posted on the PBS article may help some understand how it has changed.

From the page: "Amen. Personally, our company has had enough experience with Google to write an epic novel. We have been dedicated advertisers with Google since the first day that they made their first advertising cent. What used to be easy, reasonably priced (still expensive, but with value), and friendly has now mutated into a convoluted mess that takes two full-time people to manage and a budget larger than payroll. In a nutshell, it is broken.

We find ourselves on the phone with Google a minimum of four times a week. The algorithms have recently started changing on a near continuous basis. These ever-evolving algorithms are also TOP SECRET. I wish we received a paid click for every time that we have heard "We're not allowed to tell you why your keyword that has been stable for four years at around $50 per day suddenly spiked to $650 per day. Please go to this URL and learn about optimizing your page."

Worse yet, we find ourselves constantly redesigning our website not for ease of use, company promotion, and nice presentation of information, but rather for how we think the almighty GoogleBot will interpret our content. In an effort to conform to Google's stringent (yet ever-changing) guidelines, I fear that all websites will eventually be GoogleSites. It reminds me of the movie Demolition Man, where all restaurants in the future were Taco Bell.

The sad part is that nobody at Google seems to care any more. As they grow, the distance between us advertisers and the founders gets larger and larger. We have been here since the beginning. We have grown you to what you are today. You used to be here with us. Do no evil and join us again."
