Wow Andy. I am so glad to have you as my friend. Everyone has GOT to READ THIS. And subscribe to Wendy's blog while you're there so you don't miss future installments of her wisdom. It is stupendous!

From the page: "I feel a little bad that I let Google rent so much headspace in the last few days that I posted my first ever mad rant today. I wrote it on Saturday and even let it sit for a while before hitting publish in the hopes I could tone my anger down... I failed. ;)

Which brings up an issue that definitely can affect productivity - what do you do when you are having a really bad day? How do you turn things around when you are having a really hard time getting your game face on?

Like today. No game face here.

Well, what I really need to be doing is 1 :: asking myself better questions, and 2 :: focusing on what will move me forward rather than what's holding me back.

So I will do that today as part of Monday Motivation.

Old question :: How can I get Google back?

New question :: How can I diversify my own traffic sources to lower Google's percentage of referral traffic from 28% down to less than 10%?"

From the page: "(Lyrics by John Kay - Steppenwolf from Heretics & Privateers)

I was raised to be a fighter, I've been sluggin' all my life
Got a job, a house, a mortgage, two kids but just one wife
But I've been behind on points ever since the second round
The market keeps on goin' up while I keep slippin' down
I'm all punched out from work and family
I need a break, stand back and fan me
My corner says we just can't win
The fight is rigged, the fix is in

Ain't no rest for the weary, no mercy for the just plain ordinary people
Nobody we can trust, no reason to believe and no relief in sight
Ain't no justice in the world, still I will not be denied."

"My name is not important, I've been sent to put an end
To the wanking in the ranks of the disloyal opposition
You've been heard to complain, you don't like your status quo
And you haven't met your quota of spending, don't you know
Your mission is to conform and to consume
You're way behind now so get your ass started
Where would we be if we all did what we wanted?"

"On the back page of the paper
Next to the ad for mobile homes
I read about my brother's keeper
And the kindness he had shown
    To some helpless perfect stranger
Who cried out in his pain
And what the front page had taken from me
Was given back to me again

My thoughts turned to the teachers
And the champions of the weak
    The protectors of the creatures
And the saints down on the street
All the helpers, all the healers
Who lay hands on wounded souls
And whose daily acts of mercy
Drive the cynic from my door

Countless times I've seen the wonders
That the gift of hope can bring
To the betrayed and the forgotten
Yet I stood watching in the wings
Too many times I heard the call
And did not answer, to my shame
But I swear from this day on
I will lend a helping hand."

  • Unlearning and The Stockholm Effect

    Rated Nov 10 2007 3 reviews freedom swaraj.org

No person, place or thing is my source; I am is my source.

From the page: "The stories I've read have all given me much food for thought, so much so that I couldn't possibly say it all in a few pages. The most striking thing about these seven stories, to me, is that these writers all did well in school, come from middle-class families, and yet discovered (or "unlearned"), on their own, that school has limited rather than expanded their learning abilities. Why, I wonder, aren't more people questioning school as these writers have?

Once one reaches compulsory school age in any country, the process of schooling is identical: our natural urge to learn and explore is controlled and measured on a daily basis, and universal compulsory school attendance laws make it hard for alternatives to school to emerge. I think most of us identify with our caretakers in school and make the best of the situation. The phenomena of identifying with one's captors is known as "The Stockholm Effect," and I think it is this effect that prevents far more people from questioning their schooling and coming up with new solutions.

In August, 1973, two ex-convicts held three women and a man hostage during a robbery in Stockholm, Sweden. The robbers kept the hostages for six days. What is remarkable about the situation is that despite the robbers threats to kill the hostages, the hostages defended the robbers behavior, even days after they were rescued by the police. Indeed, two of the hostages became engaged to their captors! Journalists and doctors who studied this incident dubbed it "the Stockholm Effect" and noted it was common throughout history: slaves defended their masters, prisoners of war felt sympathy for their jailors, prostitutes defended their pimps, incest and other abuse victims excuse the actions of their dominators. School isn't as physically abusive as these other situations, but it nonetheless fits the four criteria for the Stockholm Effect to occur "

More from the page: "Shilpa Jain writes,

I have often wondered how people can do something they know to be wrong or cruel or pointless or irrelevant. Don't they get a sick, horrible feeling in the pit of their stomach, like I do? If I persist in doing or condoning what I know is not right, that dull ache in my gut becomes unbearable and I vomit. Like I did for three days in Morocco, when it hit me full-on that international development projects were all a sham.

That dull ache in the gut doesn't incapacitate Jain or any of these writers, instead it spurs them on to create new ways to learn with people, such as Jain's work with Shikshantar in India, Mako Hill's work with the Free Software movement, or Yusef Progler's teaching in a New York City college. Not only are they refusing to identify with their captors, they are actively creating escape routes for others to follow."

There is a channel on regular television called ION (channel 68 where I am) that has awesome cartoons for kids and adults alike. While many are tagging this as christianity, or Biblical, I do not believe that either cornered the market on wisdom or ethics.

I happened to have Veggie Tales playing in the background today and the wisdom and ethics displayed in that episode were exceptional and just what we all - and especially Americans - really need to learn (or remember if your parents taught you integrity as a child).

Remember that you teach by your ACTIONS - people emulate what they SEE - not what you TELL THEM TO DO. What kind of role model are you REALLY? The most accurate judge of anyone's character is how they behave AT THEIR WORST. THAT is the REAL THEM!

I recently mentioned that a friend of mine who happens to be a Canadian writer bought a new laptop and forwarded 230 email messages FROM HERSELF to three different email addresses TO HERSELF and after 72 hours only 173 ever arrived. That is a HUGE loss ratio. I will ask if any were g-mail related; however, I know that these issues are not ONLY with g-mail.

This is one of many pieces of clear evidence that I have seen that email is no longer reliable. I have no idea how many email messages have never reached their destination or me but I do know that every day some are not getting to me. I highly recommend that all correspondence be CLOSED-LOOP ONLY! What this means is that until you receive a REPLY assume the message may not have been received.

Most of us have never done this. Many relationships have been lost forever by assuming one thing when the other party never even received your message. If you have a Web site that is hosted on a shared server it can end up blacklisted very easily and prevent your email from being delivered. Because of the magnitude of SPAM, most servers are now configured to NOT even notify you when they send your emails to the "bit-bucket". (Bit-bucket is computer jargon for a trashcan).

There are services that are widely used by ISPs (Internet Service providers who host Web sites and provide Internet connections) that blacklist entire servers. You don't get notified. Your ISP doesn't necessarily get notified and even if they do they may not understand it and do nothing.

From the page: "The headers in the email show that this email was rejected purely by Google, and not the server of the recipient, which is typical of email delivery failure, so for instance when an email is rejected by AOL for whatever reason, e.g. a full mailbox, the message would come from the AOL Postmaster Mail Delivery Subsystem MAILER-DAEMON@aol.com
    Spam Email Filtering At Source

I can understand why Gmail prevents the delivery of executable files via email, as that is heavily abused by people looking to hijack innocent people's computers, but preventing someone responding to a legitimate email enquiry using some poorly tested filter system is totally wrong.

It is down to the recipient as to whether they wish to receive email communication from someone, and not down to Google who or how you communicate with them, and what words you use.

Whilst many will argue that Gmail is a free service, so they can do what they like, they have millions of users who have accepted a "social contract" to use Gmail for free in exchange for viewing advertising along side their email."

This site has many solitaire games; however, I link it in here to make a point.

In olden times, when I was a kid, we used physical playing cards instead of computers. (I mention this because when I used to speak at the A.A.U.W. events to encourage 7-8th grade girls to study science and math I would suggest that there were far better uses for computers than playing solitaire and suggested they use real cards for that - and they had no idea what I was talking about.)

Anyway, back to the point. If one of the 52 cards in the deck fell behind a desk or dropped to the floor, no matter how many ways or times you tried to win you were S.O.L. (simply out of luck.)

Once you realized that, how many more games would you play with your deck of 51? THAT, my friends, is an excellent analogy for the real life games we've been playing - simply unwinnable.

Some of us are no longer willing to play games where the outcome is obvious because others already hold all the aces. Care to join me in a new world of peace and abundance for all? Many are those who are ready to build it and see how it can be done. You are hereby personally invited to come along with us.

Time to wake up, America. We are continually manipulated by advertising and the media. The most effective method is to introduce fear - the bigger the better - and then provide the solution.

That IS the most effective way to create a business and if you're really good you can use it to repeatedly generate new sales.

The solution is for us to quit buying into the fear and end the cycle.

From the page: "The quote is from Martin Niemoeller (1892-1984), a Pastor in the Confessing Church, not by Bohoeffer who was executed by the Nazis shortly before the end of World War II.

The quote appears in the Congressional Record 14 October 1968, page 31636:

When Hitler attacked the Jews I was not a Jew, therefore I was not concerned. And when Hitler attacked the Catholics, I was not a Catholic, and therefore, I was not concerned. And when Hitler attacked the unions and industrialists, I was not a member of the unions and I was not concerned. Then, Hitler attacked me and the Protestant church -- and there was nobody left to be concerned.

Although there are some variations that have been published on that famous quotation, the words shown above are the exact ones that Niemoeller spoke in Congress.

    Yours sincerely,
    Harry W. Mazal OBE"

I remember one thing clearly from my childhood that I believe was printed in a Dear Abby or Ann Landers column. I loved reading and never missed those columns as a child. I share it again now:

People like me who choose to speak out publicly are taking a calculated risk. Even if we are individually affected, there are so many of us now that the word will still be spread and whatever happens will have been for the greatest good of all.

The stage is set for a tragedy. Only through enough individuals being willing to act courageously will it be averted. Will you join us? Will you speak out if someone who has risked all to warn you is unjustly treated? Will you be wise enough not to fall for propaganda asking you to turn in innocent people who are your friends, family or neighbors?

From the page: "most Americans do not realise that since September of last year - when Congress wrongly, foolishly, passed the Military Commissions Act of 2006 - the president has the power to call any US citizen an "enemy combatant". He has the power to define what "enemy combatant" means. The president can also delegate to anyone he chooses in the executive branch the right to define "enemy combatant" any way he or she wants and then seize Americans accordingly.

Even if you or I are American citizens, even if we turn out to be completely innocent of what he has accused us of doing, he has the power to have us seized as we are changing planes at Newark tomorrow, or have us taken with a knock on the door; ship you or me to a navy brig; and keep you or me in isolation, possibly for months, while awaiting trial. (Prolonged isolation, as psychiatrists know, triggers psychosis in otherwise mentally healthy prisoners. That is why Stalin's gulag had an isolation cell, like Guantánamo's, in every satellite prison. Camp 6, the newest, most brutal facility at Guantánamo, is all isolation cells.)

We US citizens will get a trial eventually - for now. But legal rights activists at the Center for Constitutional Rights say that the Bush administration is trying increasingly aggressively to find ways to get around giving even US citizens fair trials. "Enemy combatant" is a status offence - it is not even something you have to have done. "We have absolutely moved over into a preventive detention model - you look like you could do something bad, you might do something bad, so we're going to hold you," says a spokeswoman of the CCR.

Most Americans surely do not get this yet. No wonder: it is hard to believe, even though it is true. In every closing society, at a certain point there are some high-profile arrests - usually of opposition leaders, clergy and journalists. Then everything goes quiet. After those arrests, there are still newspapers, courts, TV and radio, and the facades of a civil society. There just isn't real dissent. There just isn't freedom. If you look at history, just before those arrests is where we are now.

I remember one thing clearly from my childhood that I believe was printed in a Dear Abby or Ann Landers column. I share it again now:

    They came for the Communists, and I didn't object - For I wasn't a Communist;
