Sarah (Sara)
Meaning: (Female) ruler, mistress; (female) minister.
Sarah, Abraham's wife, was the first of the "four mothers" of the Jewish people.
"And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her, yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations, kings of people shall be of her." Genesis 17, 15-16
Rebekah (Rivka)
Rebekah, daughter of Bethuel, and Isaac's wife, was the second of the "four mothers" of the Jewish people.
"And Isaac brought her into his mother Sarah's tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife, and he loved her, and Isaac was comforted after his mother's death." Genesis 24, 67
Rachel
Meaning: Ewe, female sheep.
One of the "four mothers" of the Jewish people. Jacob's second wife. Jacob worked for Laban, Rachel's father, fourteen years in order to marry her.
"Leah was tender eyed, but Rachel was beautiful and well favoured. And Jacob loved Rachel and said: I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter." Genesis 29, 17-18
Leah (Lea, Le'a)
One of the "four mothers" of the Jewish people. Leah and her younger sister Rachel were the two wives of Jacob.
"And Laban had two daughters, the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was Rachel. Leah was tender eyed, but Rachel was beautiful and well favored." Genesis 29, 16-17.
Deborah (Dvora)
Meaning: Bee
There are two women in the Bible named Deborah. One of them is the prophetess Deborah.
"And Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, she judged Israel at that time. And she dwelt under the palm tree of Deborah between Ramah and Beth-el in mount Ephraim, and the children of Israel came up to her for judgment." Judges 4, 4-5
Huldah (Hulda, Chulda)
Huldah was a prophetess in the time of King Josiah.
"So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asahiah, went unto Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe, now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the college, and they communed with her." 2 Kings 22, 14
