Google Headed to Oklahoma

The city of Pryor could soon become the home of an internet giant. There's nothing official, but as The News On 6 reported on Thursday, there are plenty of signs the company is looking at Pryor. News on 6 business reporter Steve Berg went to Mayes County, he reports on why the Mid-America Industrial Park is good for Google.

From the page: Without much fanfare Gmail's Mail Fetcher service now appears to be available on Google Apps for Domain accounts. Google also lifted the restriction of not allowing to fetch mail from other gmail accounts (although Help does not indicate it yet).

This is pretty significant: if you're like me, you may have opened several gmail accounts, and as the gmail service matured, you may have realized that with all the labels, search, etc. you really are better off consolidating all those into one (OK, two) accounts. Now it's possible; in fact while I'm typing this, Mail Fetcher is happily consolidating my Gmail accounts. Of course the beauty of the process that for the first time my PC isn't brought to a death-crawl while doing such housekeeping chores: it's all happening in the cloud!

The Google Talk Gadget lets you send instant messages, transfer files, make voice calls (to other GT users only) and leave voicemail messages. Interestingly, if you paste a Picasa Web Album or YouTube URL into a chat session, the gadget gives you an instant preview of the photos/videos.

Fans of Picasa Web Albums, rejoice! You've now got four times the free storage space at your disposal, plus a couple nifty new features.





Originally limited to 250MB, Picasa Web Albums now offers 1GB of storage--enough to hold 4,000 standard-resolution photos, Google says. The service has also added links for individual albums and photos, making them easier to share via e-mail or IM. Finally, there's a new Community Search feature that lets you share and search public albums.
