Interesting. I already add the contents of the vacuum cleaner to the compost (easy when you use one of the bagless varieties). Hair I knew about, but haven't really bothered to "harvest" hair and nail clippings!

Never compost tissues/toilet paper etc, and suspect this would be a questionable practice.

Roadkill? Makes me wonder how BH would react to a proposal to put the guinea pig in the compost bin, when he scampers off to the Great Guinea Pig run in the sky.....

An interesting concept. A website where you can insert your address, and it gives you a "walk score" (1 - 100, with 100 being the best). An excellent tool for those wishing to choose a sustainable way of living, and in particular, reduce their reliance on the internal combustion engine.

It is designed for the US, but also works for Canada and the UK. Make sure you include your post code, or it will be calculating it forever.

I gather it isn't entirely perfect, and didn't agree with the score of 69 it gave my address in Marple. I am less than half a mile from the town centre, where there is a more than respectable array of shops, cafes and restaurants, and even a little old-fashioned cinema. The park and library are only a little beyond the main shops. You could survive very easily without a car here.

An excellent example of how the little people and small organisations are forming alliances to deal with the inexorable power of large monopolies. Shop local where you can - there may be an extra cost, but as you tend to have to drive to most of the large supermarkets, then there will probably be a real saving.

This site also shows all the reasons I no longer shop at Tescos (or Asda and several other of the larger supermarkets).

Excellent looking blog all about green issues. Contains practical advice on reducing your own impact on the environment. I discovered it, trying to find information about patchwork (the book I borrowed from the library refers to buying material - I want to recycle material from clothes too tatty to take to the charity shop, but too nice to shred to put in the compost).
