This week is 'National ID Fraud Prevention Week' in the UK.
This site contains helpful guidance on how to prevent ID fraud. Even though this is UK based, a lot of this can apply to you wherever you are.
What amazes me, is the sort of information which can be obtained from our dustbins (and the fact that criminals are prepared to rummage through them). In the hamster household, we do shred everything which might contain sensitive information, and you don't need an expensive electrical shredder to do this.
From the page: "Bin raiding - Fraudsters pay people to go through the rubbish you throw out, looking for bank and credit card statements, pre-approved credit offers, and tax information. Everyday information that you may not think is important such as old gas, electricity and telephone bills, insurance documents, bank statements and even personal letters and envelopes they were sent in, carry valuable personal information that can be gathered together to steal an identity
A bin raiding survey commissioned by Fellowes for National Identity Fraud Prevention Week showed that an alarming 97% of household waste contained at least one or more items which could assist fraudsters in stealing an identity. Even more worryingly, almost half of all households threw away everything a potential fraudster would need to steal a person's identity."
More information and help throughout the site.

An excellent review from Advena's pages which stands alone, and merits a separate thumbs up.
An outline, with extensive links, of the extent to which power corrupts, or at the very least enables people to compromise their beliefs (if they ever believed them in the first place).
Having loved Midnight Oil's "Beds are Burning", I find this disappointing to say the least, but by this stage in my life, I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
