The Chemistry: Potassium chlorate is a powerful oxidizing agent. The gummy bear (composed mainly of table sugar, sucrose), on the other hand, is an energy source that is easy to oxidize. Sulfuric acid decomposes potassium chlorate to oxygen (Equation: 2KClO3(s) + heat Ã¢â,¬"> 2KCl(s) + 3O2(g)) The sugar burns in the presence of oxygen. Potassium creates the purple flame.
