I seek cultural enlightenment through the internet, and I feel like that in and of itself is bitterly ironic.

Not all of the photos "changed the world," but many are excellent pieces of photojournalism. Much beyond that, the comments on the pictures are incredible. I say incredible with a bad connotation. There's immense stupidity, ignorance, intolerance, immaturity and blind hatred. Some photos were heartbreaking, but the comments on the photos were what really made me horribly depressed. Yes, it's the Internet, and I should expect comments from rabble-rousers and the narrow-minded, but again, it's incredible to see them amidst poignant photos. I also came away with a sense of futility after reading the comments. So many people responded to dumb comments but so many of them responded with even dumber comments. Also, people who tried to pen their heartfelt thoughts just ended up getting slammed by another person, another jerk hiding behind the anonymity of the Internet. Why should anyone ever write anything on the Internet if the results are inconsequential?

But obviously, a few bad apples shouldn't fuck your day up, as they say. It's just the existence of bad apples that use the Internet with the least productive means that make me sad.

(Note: Why did I write this in lieu of futility?)
