From the page: "People who live off the grid have to watch large power draws from big appliances. Those who have ample power, such as from micro-hydro turbines, still need to ensure these electrical draws do not occur simultaneously. For those living on solar or hybrid systems, electrical appliances are simply not an option. Propane becomes their source for cooking, refrigeration, clothes drying, heat, water heating, and back up generators. "

From the page: "I basically grew up in the kitchen. Some of my best memories are of watching my grandmother cook or standing on a chair by the stove to stir the pot while my pops and I made dinner. When I went vegetarian as a teen and then vegan in my 20s, it felt like I needed that kind of guidance once again. Since there weren窶t any family members with meat-free cooking knowledge, I had to find some additional cooking heroes.
So many of you are amazing cooks, and I bet that you have folks in your lives that were essential to developing your love for the kitchen. I窶d love to hear about them! Here are the folks who helped me along in my cooking adventures."
From the page: "In order to obtain a permit for offshore drilling, you obviously need a plan for the event of a catastrophe, such as the environmental disaster in the Gulf of Mexico caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Lawmakers this week examined British Petroleumâs (BP), as well as other oil companies, plans in light of âoeBPâs struggle to contain the spillâ, according to the Wall Street Journal. From listing a dead wildlife expert to protecting extinct walruses, the credibility of these declarations is questionable and been termed âoecookie cutterâ."
The language of sustainability can be complex, particularly if it's nested in systems thinking. Learning how to make the case for sustainability needs to be situational. I customize my "making a case for sustainability" style by asking a lot of questions.
From the page: "Early in my gardening years, a friend gave me Epitaph for a Peach: Four Seasons on My Family Farm. I was moved by this family's tale of Japanese internment, organic farming, and the Sun Crest peach. In fact, I planted a Sun Crest peach in my orchard so I could experience this incredible fruit that is difficult to market in today's grocery store monoculture. Now, David Mas Masumoto has written a new book Wisdom of the Last Farmer: Harvesting Legacies from the Land."

From the page: "Container gardening isn't only for savvy urban gardeners and folks with limited space to grow, it can also be for folks who want to maximize their yields in a controlled environment. Not only does growing potatoes in a barrel reduce the amount of weeding and exposure to pests and fungi, you don't even have to risk shovel-damage to the tender potatoes by digging them out of the ground when they're done, just tip the container over!"
From the page: "The United States Department of Energy has awarded 13 projects $62,000,000 for Concentrating Solar Power (CSP)."
Last week, the President's Cancer Panel (the Panel) released a report titled "Reducing Environmental Cancer Risk" summarizing research conducted in 2008-2009 on "the state of environmental cancer research, policy, and programs addressing known and potential effects of environmental exposures on cancer." The Panel found that "the true burden of environmentally induced cancer has been grossly underestimated;" however, the American Cancer Society (ACS) disagrees with the significance the government gives to chemical exposure as a source of the disease. Will such a debate weaken efforts to regulate dangerous chemicals?
