been to the museum...wandering around the manor house talking about the ascendency...then on to the stables where they keep the ghosts and horrors...it wasn't a famine, it was intentional starvation. political genocide.

famine road

"Idle as trout in light Colonel Jones
these Irish, give them no coins at all; their bones
need toil, their characters no less." Trevelyan's
seal blooded the deal table. The Relief
Committee deliberated: "Might it be safe,
Colonel, to give them roads, roads to force
From nowhere, going nowhere of course?"

one out of every ten and then
another third of those again
women - in a case like yours.

Sick, directionless they worked. Fork, stick
were iron years away; after all could
they not blood their knuckles on rock, suck
April hailstones for water and for food?
Why for that, cunning as housewives, each eyed -
as if at a corner butcher - the other's buttock.

anything may have caused it, spores
a childhood accident; one sees
day after day these mysteries.

Dusk: they will work tomorrow without him.
They know it and walk clear. He has become
a typhoid pariah, his blood tainted, although
he shares it with some there. No more than snow
attends its own flakes where they settle
and melt, will they pray by his death rattle.

You never will, never you know
but take it well woman, grow
your garden, keep house, good-bye.

"It has gone better than we expected, Lord
Trevelyan, sedition, idleness, cured
in one. From parish to parish, field to field;
the wretches work till they are quite worn,
then fester by their work. We march the corn
to the ships in peace. This Tuesday I saw bones
out of my carriage window. Your servant Jones."

Barren, never to know the load
of his child in you, what is your body
now if not a famine road?

john would be so proud! "For eight years, Condoleezza Rice dealt with the Beltway punditry and the access-craving White House press corps. The reception she got, with a handful of exceptions, was fawning. Which leaves her totally unprepared for a return to an academy populated with the Daily Show generation: bright young minds with a very critical attitude towards the last eight years."

warren sayz! "All of which illustrates a peculiar thing about science fiction: people expect it to predict the future. All H. G. Wells had to say was "shit's going to blow up in 1940", and everyone thought he was fucking Nostradamus. The label stuck- science fiction was about predicting the future.

Only it's not. It can't be. The future is a moving target. It's not predictable like the weather - and even weather forecasting misses the odd devastating hurricane. Science fiction's never going to tell you what you'll be doing next year. What it really does is use speculation to examine the present-day condition - but it can, however, warn you about possible futures. "

kossacks! "One way to look at how the Bush administration redefined torture out of existence, so that it could, er, torture human beings, is to compare their criteria for "enhanced interrogation" with those for rape. Raping someone need not leave any long-term physical scars; it certainly doesn't permanently impair any bodily organ; it has no uniquely graphic dimensions .... and although it's cruel, it's hardly unusual....

So ask yourself: if Abu Zubaydah had been raped 83 times, would we be talking about no legal consequences for his rapist - or the people who monitored and authorized the rape? "

"As an aside, I think the idea of jealously protecting copyright and trademarks, in this digital age, is outdated and ignorant. You want your ideas to spread, and you should encourage people to spread your ideas, not put up all kinds of boundaries and restrictions and obstacles to that being done."
