"I'll Hold You in My Heart"
    lyricsdownload.com/eddy-arnold-i-ll-hold-you-in-my-heart-lyrics.html [lyricsdownload.com/eddy-arnold-i-ll-hold-you-in-my-heart-lyrics.html]

One of my first and fondest memories is of English Leather cologne wafting through the room while watching my handsome father ironing his trousers for Sunday morning church services. (In his opinion, my Mother's well-intentioned attempts at pressing just the right razor-sharp crease into them always fell short of the mark). There he stood, broad shoulders clad in a crisp white dress shirt and Windsor-knotted tie, calf-length dark socks worn with perfectly polished wingtip shoes, and... light blue cotton boxers! As he deftly wielded the steamiron across blended wool or linen, he serenaded my mother and me. His selections invariably included old Eddy Arnold aka "The Tennessee Plowboy" tunes. Daddy had a lovely deep voice and could croon a dead on Eddy-rendition.

Sad news came Thursday from his home in Nashville, that Eddy has departed for that "final cattle-call in the sky". I will miss knowing that he's still around. My pal and neighbor down Tennessee-way, KEV (who's a fine example of a Southern gentleman, himself) has posted a very nice and detailed memorial to his fellow "small hometown boy made good ". When I left hearth & home for the first time to attend college at Freed-Hardeman, I spent many hours in the Eddy Arnold Reading Room in the local library.

I am in the process of searching my files for a picture to post of my brother taken with Mr. Arnold at a banquet held at The Country Music Hall of Fame a couple of years ago, honoring the singer.

ps. This one's for you, Daddy ;)

I am the grateful and fortunate recipient of one of (the unmistakably feminine and sox-centric) Ferretsgames' latest original objects d'arte. Thanx for the prezzie, doll-gurl :)

"What is the use of a book, without pictures or conversations?"

    ~Alice in Wonderland~

As her many forum friends will attest, our own Alice in Funderland is certainly a bright and engaging conversationalist. Truly a dear, and team player extraordinaire.

    ~Triumph and Tragedy~

Elation...immediately followed by sorrow. I am heartsick. My pick for Kentucky Derby winner, "EIGHT BELLES", the only filly in the race finished an amazing and admirable second place. However, immediately after completion of the race, she inexplicably stumbled then fell, which resulted in injuries too severe to survive culminating with her euthanization on the track. In the process of running her little heart out in a field of "big boys" and leaving 18 of 20 in her dust, she broke both front ankles. The track vets stated that they had never seen breakage of this sort in more than one leg and there was no other alternative but to "put her down" since it would be impossible for her to stand. She was born in Kentucky and as a colt, grazed upon the limestone-rich bluegrass for which our beautiful Commonwealth is widely renown.

Congrats to winner, "BIG BROWN" who is also Kentucky bred. Gladly, he gave his heart to winning the race. Sadly, "EIGHT BELLES" gave her life.

Update: Please also see Roy's outdoors2.stumbleupon.com [outdoors2.stumbleupon.com] page for a touching and fitting tribute to all horses, including "EIGHT BELLES".

More later, am in a meditative/reflective state at present...

    "The First Saturday in May"
The most exciting two minutes in sports

A new movie about The Kentucky Derby. Get an inside look at how the racehorses get to "the run for the roses" and the people who're along for the ride. (As an aside, I attended my first Kentucky Derby a few weeks before I was two years old...hat n'all ;))

    "From sire to sire
    It's born in the blood
    The fire of a mare
And the strength of a stud
    It's breeding and it's training
    And it's something unknown
    That drives you and carries
    You home.

And it's run for the roses
    As fast as you can
    Your fate is delivered
    Your moment's at hand
It's the chance of a lifetime
    In a lifetime of chance
And it's high time you joined
    In the dance"
