1000 Wishes Series

Denis Brown 2009, based on dandelion seed heads

Wishie series, Denis Brown, 2009.

I asked people to e-mail me a wish, and I wrote many hundreds of their wishes into these works. Etched in glass and with writing layered on top of writing, the wishes remain mostly secret/illegible, but they embody 3-D images of blow balls, wishies, soffione and pusteblume. In releasing a private wish to me, I hoped it might become more tangible to the wisher.

Body as Dream
photographs by Marco Ambrosi with calligraphy by Monica Dengo

Ambrosi&Dengo

I had seen a part of this series last year published in 'Letter Arts Review' magazine but only now stumbled upon these remarkable images online. Painting calligraphy on bodies became cliched after Peter Greenaway used Brody Neuenschwander to do so in the film 'The Pillow Book'. That could not easily be followed without pastiche. However these collaborative images maintain an integrity due to sheer beauty. The postures develop the bodies into glyphs, with calligraphy as a skin which simultaneously reveals and camouflages the form. I met Monica Dengo once several years ago in Thomas Ingmire's home, and am now delighted to see her work in this collaboration has advanced to such unique grace.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED JAPANESE CALLIGRAPHY MOVIES are available at mainichishodo.org/movie_top.php [mainichishodo.org/movie_top.php] Click the thumbnail above to launch one of these.

Below: Calligraphy by members of the 'Mainich Shodo Kai' ('Shodo' is Japanese Calligraphy; 'kai' means organization),
it is said that it is the biggest incorporated foundation of shodo in Japan. (The site is Japanese only). The organization consists of more than 10 thousand members including leading calligraphers in shodo world in Japan.

I'm informed that Mainichi represents all sorts of "sho" such as "Kanji(Chinese character)-sho", "Kana(Hiragana)-sho",
"Kindai(modern) shibun(poetry, verses)-sho","Daiji(?)-sho", "Kokuji(inscriptions)",
"Tenkoku(seal engraving)","Zeneisho(avant garde)". You can see these styles respectively in the thumbnails at mainichishodo.org/cg_type.php [mainichishodo.org/cg_type.php] . They link to a selection of works. However to see the subtlety of the sumi you need much bigger pictures, and there are many linked from the page mainichishodo.org/shinsakaiinworks/shinsakaiinworks.html [mainichishodo.org/shinsakaiinworks/shinsakaiinworks.html] . However they are only linked by Japanese text so it's a bit of a lucky dip. Tip: use Google image search for extra large images of "mainichishodo" if you want a thumbnail preview. These are just two examples which I find strong and bold (I've rescaled them to one sixteenth size just to fit them on screen! Right-click and open them in a new window if you want to see at full size)

Calligraphy: the art of beautiful writing, click here for full info

There's something sensual and satisfying about writing calligraphy. When it's going well, letters flow effortlessly from pen to paper. This practice is a keystone of culture, though no longer can it really be seen as a functional art. Read on to glimpse what calligraphy today can mean.

You'll be surprised to see the SPEED and fluency of highly skilled calligraphy:

Calligraphy is all about moving ink in a pleasing way.
This "reductionist calligraphy" is without words, yet tells a conceptual story as ink moves by itself. See a movie here.
