Independent thinker proudly proclaiming that authority is not the truth, but that truth is the authority. Primo Levi's dictum has seldom been more fitting, "Silence is complicity". My blog is a testament to the fact that some of us were in the know and did not watch the people go under in silence. The truth must be spoken, and spoken for all to hear. I have recently expanded my blog to include some of my other interests, art, music, and science. I hope also to provide some insight into the current economic crisis, and of how some individuals can avoid a descent into the abyss that is surely headed their way. Let me finish by saying that I am an optimist who prefers to avoid disasters by exploring the dark side. My goal is to be informed. Knowing how to escape the negative world necessitates looking into the darkness in a way devoid of emotions but filled with creativity--something I learned from the East.

From the page: "Our study shows that the ability of old human muscle to be maintained and repaired by muscle stem cells can be restored to youthful vigor given the right mix of biochemical signals," said Professor Irina Conboy, a faculty member in the graduate bioengineering program that is run jointly by UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco, and head of the research team conducting the study. "This provides promising new targets for forestalling the debilitating muscle atrophy that accompanies aging, and perhaps other tissue degenerative disorders as well."

From the page: "Intel has introduced a handheld device designed to help dyslexic, low-vision, and blind persons by using a combination of a point-and-shoot camera and text-to-speech technology to read text that for them would otherwise be difficult or impossible to comprehend.

The Reader has a list price of $1,499. The user points the device's five-megapixel, autofocus camera at a document, book, or sign, snaps a photo of it, then listens to the text spoken by what Intel describes as a "lifelike" male or female voice over either the device's speakers or through headphones. Alternatively, low-vision users can view text at variable levels of magnification on the device's 4.3-inch (10.9cm) 16:9 LCD display.

About the size of a hefty paperback, the reader measures 6.5 by 5.35 by 1.3 inches (16.5 by 13.6 by 3.3 centimeters) and - including a removable battery with a four-hour lifespan - weighs 1.38 lb (.63 kg)."

From the page: "The US government is now so totally under the thumbs of organized interest groups that "our" government can no longer respond to the concerns of the American people who elect the president and the members of the House and Senate. Voters will vent their frustrations over their impotence on the president, which implies a future of one-term presidents. Soon our presidents will be as ineffective as Roman emperors in the final days of that empire..."

From the page: "Traders at Goldman Sachs recorded only one daily loss in the third quarter, highlighting the trading bonanza sweeping Wall Street as central banks continue to pump billions of dollars into the financial system.

The performance " revealed on Wednesday in a regulatory filing " compares with two losing trading days in the previous quarter and confirms that the authorities' drive to revive markets after the crisis is yielding huge windfalls for some banks.

Before the crisis, banks regularly recorded trading losses on several days in a quarter.

Goldman made more than $100 million in profits on 36 of the 65 days in the three months to September and recorded more than $50 million in profit on more than eight out of 10 trading days, the filing shows."

From the page: "Dan Holland has just interviewed Wall Street chronicler Charlie Gasparino. The first few paragraphs of the interview that appeared on RealClearMarkets are published below.

There's good reason to believe that Gasparino's latest book, The Sellout, will become the definitive book on the current financial crisis and the events that led up to The Great Recession. Spanning three decades, The Sellout pulls no punches in chronicling the rise and fall of excessive Wall Street leverage and risk taking, as well as the cast of colorful characters that ultimately brought the U.S. financial system to its knees. It will hit bookshelves Tuesday."
