It’s been a while since I posted, and it’s mostly due to the fact that my wife and I have moved, and most of my time has been taken up by trying to get things unpacked and organized, as well as a working a full time job, which has left me with little time for much else. So, this post is to kind of catch up on some recent music news and hopefully start some regular posting from here on out. Last Saturday I got the chance the catch The Pines, which was my first time seeing them. I was not disappointed, they played all the songs I was hoping they would, and also played some new songs from their upcoming album Dark So Gold. I did tape the show and am in the process of mastering it and will upload it here soon. That also brings me an unfortunate piece of news. Megaupload, which is where I host all my live shows, was taken down by the FBI recently. That means all the links to those shows are now dead. I plan on going through and fixing them at some point in the future, but if there is anything you’re really wanting, let me know and I can post it ASAP. A bit of sad news came out yesterday, Etta James passed away after a battle with lukemia. Best known for her song “At Last“, she was a legend in the music business and will be sorely missed. Another one of my favorite songs by Etta is “The Wallflower (Roll With Me Henry)“, which I heard for the first time in the movie Back To The Future, and will always carry that memory with me. RIP Etta, you were truly one of a kind.

  • Prof-King Gampo | Music For Humans

    Rated Dec 29 2011 1 review music music4humans.us

I'll be honest here, the only reasons I gave Prof a chance was because Slug was promoting his new album, King Gampo, Prof is a local artist, and the album cover is just plain intriguing/weird. So, it had less to do with any music I had heard than any other factors. But, once I did listen to the album, I was blown away. First off, appearances are deceiving, Prof sounds nothing like he looks like. He's got a booming voice that commands attention immediately. His lyrics are mostly silly and very politically incorrect. I've never seen him live and in person, but if you look up Youtube videos of him in concert, you can just feel the energy coming off of him, and you can tell he is having a blast on stage. Also, his most recent music video, for the song "Need Your Love", is one of the funniest videos I've seen this year. There aren't really any tracks I skipped on this album, it's pretty solid throughout, but my two favorite tracks are "Gampo" and "Lucky", which you can listen to below. Be sure to buy the album if you like the songs, it definitely feels good supporting an artist who is still relatively unknown and you know ever album purchase helps out his cause.

  • Brett Dennen-Loverboy | Music For Humans

    Rated Dec 25 2011 1 review music music4humans.us

I remember reading some reviews earlier in Brett Dennen’s career that called him the next coming of Dylan and being intrigued by that. While I never really thought those were fair comparisons, I did find a lot of the same themes in his music as Dylan’s. Brett’s most recent album, Loverboy, is a departure from those more socially conscious and serious themes. This is much more a poppy, upbeat record, and while that may be hard for some fans to digest, for me, it’s great to see an artist I like really have fun with the music he’s making. A couple songs I really enjoyed are “Frozen In Slow Motion” & “Surprise, Surprise“. “Frozen In Slow Motion” is a song about a breakup that literally just slows your life to a crawl while everyone else’s seems to be moving at normal speed. And the further away from the relationship you get, the more it hurts instead of getting better with time. “Surprise, Surprise”, which has a couple meanings to me, first about how life might now always go how you expected it too, and secondly, if you give it some time, things will start coming your way in life. Hopefully you’ll find the songs below enjoyable enough to give the whole album a listen at some point, because while this may be a departure of sorts for Dennen, it’s definitely head and shoulders above most pop music out there today.

  • Zee Avi-Ghostbird | Music For Humans

    Rated Dec 18 2011 1 review music music4humans.us

Zee Avi probably isn't a name that's familiar to most people, but with her talent, it will be very soon. She is a Malaysian born folk/pop singer and guitar player. Her most recent album, Ghostbird, is one of the best albums I've had a chance to listen to this year, and really showcases her vocal abilities. The album starts out with "Swell Window", which to me seems to be about a long distance relationship, and trying to hold onto the precious moments you have together before you are separated by distance again. One of my other favorite tracks is "31 Days", a song written about one of her friends, who was homeless at one point in life and remarked "I was homeless for 31 days in June". It's probably one of the best examples of how lyrics and music can compliment each other to get a message across, and it makes for a moving song. If you enjoy the songs below, be sure to pick up the album, it's worth the money (and more).

  • Ryan Adams-Ashes & Fire | Music For Humans

    Rated Dec 14 2011 1 review music music4humans.us

I've been a huge Ryan Adams fan since the first day I heard Come Pick Me Up, and I haven't regretted it since. But, I'll be honest, the last couple albums have made me wonder if he would ever regain the form that made me fall in love with his music in the first place. Thankfully, he has released "Ashes & Fire", and while I won't call it a "comeback", it is definitely a step in the right direction. It's more acoustic based than his past couple albums, and his voice has never sounded better. My favorite song on the album is "I Love You But I Don't Know What To Say", it's a really atmospheric and sweet song about finding the right person in life, and one can only assume it's about his new bride, Mandy Moore. She seems to have had a positive effect on his life, and it is shining through in his music as well. Another highlight of the album is "Lucky Now", which according to Ryan is about his former band mate, the late Chris Feinstein (affectionately nicknamed Spacewolf). It was the first single from the album, as it's one of the more upbeat, radio friendly songs represented here. Fans of Ryan should see this album as a great sign of things to come, and proof that he still has whatever ingredient it takes to be a brilliant musician.

  • Rachael Yamagata-Chesapeake | Music For Humans

    Rated Dec 10 2011 1 review music music4humans.us

After a three year absence from the music scene, Rachael Yamagata is back with a new album title "Chesapeake". While her previous album "Elephants...Teeth Sinking Into Heart" was a somber, heartbreaking album, this album is a little more upbeat. It starts out with a bang in the form of Even If I Don't, a song about a failed relationship that she can't go back to no matter how much she wants to. The next track, Starlight, has a really cool hard bass line and counteracts it with really sensitive lyrics about the need for another person and wondering if the feeling is mutual. From there, the rest of the album is a mix of solid music, from upbeat to sad to ballads. This may not be my favorite album of hers (that goes to "Elephants"), but it's probably her most accessible and consistent, and should appeal to a wide variety of people (and hopefully make some new fans along the way).

  • Grieves- Together/Apart | Music For Humans

    Rated Dec 07 2011 1 review music music4humans.us

One thing I've noticed this year is that there have been quite a few strong rap releases. Grieves most recent album, Together / Apart, is right at the top of that list. This is his first full length release with Rhymesayers, and it was definitely worth the wait. For those not familiar with Grieves, he combines rap with singing and smart lyrics, and even some rock sprinkled in here and there. Budo is the guy making all the beats for the album, and he does an amazing job as always. Grieves may not look like your typical rapper, but when he opens his mouth, there is no mistaking what is coming out of his mouth is worth your time and money. Together / Apart is a strong album from start to finish. It opens with the first single off the album, "Lightspeed", which is a song about reminiscing on child hood and how people need to slow down in life. Another standout track to me is "Pressure Cracks", which, as the title implies, is about pressures in life, whether it be relationships, fame, or expectations. Anyone looking for an album that has quite a bit of thought provoking lyrics, but also has a fun side to it as well, this is the one you are looking for.
