From the page: "Massachusetts State Police arrested a 19-year-old MIT student Friday at Boston's Logan International Airport after receiving a report that a woman had what appeared to be a bomb strapped to her chest.
The woman arrested at the Boston airport was identified as Star Simpson, an MIT student.

Authorities said the device proved to be fake.

Star Simpson, a student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was charged with disorderly conduct and carrying a hoax device.

Simpson was arraigned later Friday in Boston Municipal Court. District Court Judge Paul Mahoney set bail at $750 and ordered her to return to court on October 29 for a pretrial hearing.

Authorities called to the scene saw a woman on a street outside the airport's Terminal C.

She was told to stop, raise her hands and make no movements, and she followed those directions, said Maj. Scott Pare, the airport commanding officer for the Massachusetts State Police.

Another title for this might be "Thinking the unthinkable." The billion ton US dollar gorilla in the global living room is becoming an unavoidable topic of conversation. The question is how healthy is the gorilla, and what do we do if it gets sick?
The US dollar is the de facto global currency. Contracts are written in it, commodity prices and futures are defined by it, even terrorists are paid with it. ..........................

Economics should be a cynical science, because of some of the phenomena it has to deal with. Common wisdom is that with the dollar down, exports will go up, and help balance the trade deficit and current account deficit.

That wisdom is about to be put to the test, and few cynics will be surprised if it doesn't work. The US is an advanced economy, highly equity driven. The US isn't exclusively owned by the US any more. Foreigners own quite a bit of US equity, and the benefits of exports effectively go to them, not necessarily directly into the US economy, like in the classic scenario.

US-owned assets and equity are still gigantic, and they own a lot of foreign interests as well, but it's a much more complex situation. However- those assets now work overseas, invest overseas, and perhaps more importantly, hold foreign currency. Say you're a US company in Germany You're generating euros, which are making a lot more US dollar value, and look much better on your books. Do you just naturally convert back to US dollars? Or do you hold on to your strong, rising, euros, and look even better on your US books?
