A review of The Amateur by Robert Littell. The book is a thriller that manages to add humor while have a very serious undercurrent and some exciting drama. A minor data analyst at the CIA can't convince his bosses to go after a terrorist, so he blackmails them into letting him try. His tradecraft is amateur but his heart is true. Will he manage to stick it to his old bosses?

Questions and comments about the new remastered Beatles albums, available as both mono and stereo box sets. The mono versions are apparently more faithful to the Beatles' decisions. The stero versions were often created for the US market, at least until late in the life of the band.

Two books are reviewed, one by Magdalen Nabb and one by Thomas Perry. "The Marshal and the Murderer" by the late Nabb is a whodunit with a rich sense of history that takes place in a modern Italian village. "The Butcher's Boy" is an early book by Perry that pits US Department of Justice investigator against a mob hit man, even though her bosses don't believe that crimes are being committed. Perry greater body of work, full of female protagonists, is discussed.
