Competitive Enterprise Institute is a 25 year old guy from Washington, Washington DC, USA
The Competitive Enterprise Institute is a non-profit public policy organization founded by Fred Smith, who before founding CEI in 1984 served as a Senior Policy Analyst at the Environmental Protection Agency. CEI is dedicated to advancing the principles of individual liberty and free enterprise. We are nationally recognized as a leading voice on a broad range of public policy issues-from free market approaches to environmental policy, to antitrust and technology policy, to personal liberty, risk regulation, and a range of other issues. At CEI, we emphasize that we are NOT "pro-big business" but we are PRO-market, PRO-liberty, and PRO-individual freedom. We believe in policies that are fair, and that individuals are best helped not by government intervention but by making their own choices in an open marketplace. CEI recognizes that everyday citizens are losing power over their government and their economy thanks to a few powerful elites, self-serving politicians, and special interests; and our aim is to be a point of push back to educate and empower citizens to take back that control. We see the dangers in collusion between big government and big business to the detriment of taxpayers and smaller entrepreneurs. We work to give average citizens the analysis and tools they need to stay informed on all these fronts. However, CEI is not a traditional "think tank." We frequently produce groundbreaking research on issues of individual and economic liberty, but our work does not stop there. It is not enough to simply identify and articulate solutions to public policy problems; it is also necessary to defend and promote those solutions at all phases of the public policy debate. We reach out to the public and the media to ensure that our ideas are heard, work with policymakers to ensure that they are implemented, and, when necessary, take our arguments to court. This "full service approach" to public policy helps make us an effective and powerful force for economic freedom. CEI has always maintained consistent and principled stances on all of our issues. For example, on the issue of global warming, we refused to change our position even in the face of losing the financial support of large corporate donors such as Shell and Exxon Mobil, who disagree with our position. Some of the other issues we have, and are currently worked on, include: GMO (genetically modified organisms) foods-which help those in developing nations fight hunger, chemical risk-we fight the banning of products that make peoples lives better-cleaner-safer, experimental pharmaceuticals-which give hope to those suffering from life threatening or debilitating diseases, international trade-which can be utilized as a tool to help lift poor nations out of poverty, technology-another tool for leveling the barriers to individual and economic freedom, etc.
