From the page: "I opposed this war in Iraq. I'd always thought it was smart of President GHW Bush not to 'take out Saddam' after he'd demonized him so personally back in 1991. Back then I didn't think about it in terms of American lives saved, but in keeping Iran from drawing too close to world power status. Saddam served for twenty years as an effective buffer state keeping Iran from threatening Saudi oil fields. Keeping Saddam in power--even allowing him to gas the Kurds whom we'd coaxed into rebelling against him--however criminal that was--served to keep in power the one man who could keep Iran from consolidating the Shiite world under one power. It never occured to me then to think that we might try to occupy that land, much less to consider what the experience of US troops and contractors would be if they tried to go in there and stay for several years. In that, the first President Bush was smarter than me. But dumb as I was, I still knew going into Iraq was wrong."
