From the page: "Maybe I'm a little idealistic and inexperienced. I have always believed that when one writes a dissertation, one has written something good, beneficial, informative, exciting, fresh, innovative . . . [fill in your adjective of choice here]. It doesn't always happen, I know. But I think we strive for excellence. Right? Yesterday afternoon I read a dissertation-- all 120 pages of it-- and it was crap. Really. Crap. And a few times I was quite horrified by what I was reading. Really. Horrified. Offended, even."

From the page: "Since the state introduced the Standards of Learning in 1998, local teachers say it's harder to take students out on field trips because teachers and principals fear that students won't have enough time in the classroom to prepare for SOL exams, which test what the state wants students to learn. Because field trips often take an entire school day, some teachers and administrators worry that students are focusing on only one subject on the day of the field trip rather than four or five."

Even though this is the hardest job I can imagine, even though I've walked around in a state of perpetual exhaustion all year, and even though I used to make more money answering the telephone when I was sixteen, I have the best job ever."

6/2/05: "Yesterday, the sophomore classes were to turn in the last essay of the year - we've got more than half a month of school left, so I didn't think it asking too much... after a year of writing various essays, one would think that they could whip out the essay in an hour or so. One student turned his in. One. The rest of them whined pathetically. So very disappointed. And yet, somewhat expected. Somehow, my relationship with these classes has disintigrated to the point where they do nothing and whine constantly about every assignment." 7/14/05: "My newphew is giving a rare photo smile - he was really sad to not quite make the height limit for the bumper cars. Too old for the kiddie rides and too short for the "really good rides." We tried again later with a new ticket taker who completely missed his tip-toe lift to just make the mark. Obliviousness saved the day!"

10/20/05: "The other day, I walked through the office and forgot that it was only October... it feels like there never was a summer, just an unending school year. Reason #927 to live in a region with 4 definite seasons."
