Thanks for passing this one along. People often say things like, "He/She is strong and has been through so much worse, yet always manages to come out okay in the end."
Well my answer to that is this: "Never take serious depression and/or suicide warnings lightly, no matter how many times someone has been down that road. Because even the world's strongest swimmer will eventually drown if he never reaches land. Sometimes, people who never find a place of true safety get tired of treading water and simply can't do it anymore."

I think this is very true for many of us SU (and other social network) addicts. I think most of us who are aware of all the close-mindedness and hostile online behavior of a large percentage of heavy Internet users can recognize this. We tend to be more maladjusted, opinionated, neurotic and socially avoidant than members of the general population. (Note that I say "large percentage of heavy users" rather than "all Internet users" before you start sending me irate mails protesting loudly and rudely that I'm a douche bag idiot, which would only serve to reinforce my point.) :-P~~

As Amichai-Hamburger expected, the Wikipedians were more comfortable online. But...although Wikipedia is founded on the notion of openly sharing and collecting knowledge as a community, they scored low on agreeableness and openness. "Wikipedia in a way demonstrates the spirit of the internet. People contribute without any financial reward."
Amichai-Hamburger speculates that Wikipedians...take part because they struggle to express themselves in real-world social situations. "They are compensating," he suggests. "It is their way to have a voice in this world."
This is consistent with previous research on online communication, says Scott Caplan of the University of Delaware in Newark, who suspects that heavy users of sites such as Digg and Twitter may have similar characteristics. "People who prefer online social behaviour tend to have higher levels of social anxiety and lower social skills," he says.
Now excuse me, I have to go take my daily sedative and go obsessively rearrange my sock drawer rather than force myself to interact with real, live human beings (the horror!). ;-)
