A little more than a year ago, when the Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim increased his stake in the New York Times Company (NYT), I wrote "I pity the Times Mexico bureau chief who has to tiptoe through who is and isn't out of favor with the paper's new sugar daddy." Now we have a very clear example of how the Times treats Slim within its pages; it's not pretty, and the journalistic compromise can be seen well beyond Mexico.

They should have called it the iDisrupt. Steve Jobs' big reveal today was more impressive for its ripple effects than for the device itself. This computer is the climax of a decade's worth of technological change. For the last 10 years, industries have been coping with how the Internet and mobile computing are changing their business models. And now we have a computer that does not just promise to drive a final stake in the way things once were, but offers a new path forward. Steve Jobs has never been more of a beneficent dictator.

Thus, being a Hulu user is no longer just a convenience; it has become a statement. It's an acknowledgment that the Internet isn't just changing what we watch, but how we watch. Certainly, people were watching shows online before Hulu. But without a central site to collect the majority of shows available, there wasn't a central destination for the people who watched TV online. Hulu's brand is now as important to its consumers as to its creators.
