Seeing-eye horse story stirs controversy | Latest News | WFAA.com

The consensus of opinion about the original story seems to be that what the young lady is doing is wrong. Although odd, I don't think it is as outrageous as most seem to think. Many ask why doesn't she use a wheelchair instead. My answer, because the horse is smarter. A trained therapy horse is NOT going to step on someone or kick someone, just as a seeing-eye dog is not going to bite someone. Cats & dogs are trained when & where to use the "bathroom." Well-trained horses in whatever discipline do not stop to use the "facilities" when on the racetrack, in the arena, etc. I see no reason that this horse would be any different. I saw some question why she can't walk if she has legs which are strong enough to ride. Again, the questioners don't understand. It's long been established that horses make wonderful therapy animals, many people who use them have basically no control over their lower limbs. Controlling a horse, or sitting a horse based on your leg strength is just one of many ways of controlling the animal.

I already knew about the story & was just appalled. I became even more appalled when, I read here, that: 1. Nurses came out of the ER twice to plead with the officer & verifying that the woman had already been coded twice; 2. The hospital is in Plano's jurisdiction, not Dallas'. A Plano officer even came up (perhaps called by the hospital), & offered to take the player inside if the Dallas cop didn't want to "realse him from custody." Even that wouldn't appease.

Like NC2K, I, too, know lots of law enforcement people personally - in my case, because of my profession. That being said, I am sorry to report that this type of behavior is becoming norm rather than the exception. I usually call it the Napoleon complex - little (not necessarily in stature) people who are given power over others cannot handle the power well. My family had countless examples of this kind of behavior among the Russians who were given positions of power over those behind the Iron Curtain.

This behavior is another example of how we are moving towards a police state. The only good thing about this incident is that this type of outrage is usually needed to get the sheeple motivated to do something. Because I know what it's like to arrive a second too late at a bedside, I know that my previous statement will be no comfort to the son-in-law. The haunted feeling of being too late will lessen after time, even if it never truly goes away.

Newspaper convention canceled amid industry woes

It would help if papers stuck to true journalism & news. We canceled our subscription to the state newspaper, not because of the economy, but because they had a massive redo & became a USA Today clone. They even have advertising on the front page now! Everything is an editorial & no story is simply written any more.

All of a sudden I'm glad I made the decision to not pursue journalism as a career when I graduated from J-school.

I know that the paper media are in trouble, but I was flabbergasted to learn last night that The Rocky Mountain News is closing after 150 years.

Say it ain't so! I thought franchise admins were supposed to try to make things better instead of worse. I guess being so far north, they don't get to watch too many Texans' games.

Although people do need to be more careful on social websites, I do think the employer over-reacted, severely, in this case. - She didn't name the company.
