PENTAGON OUT TO CUT VETS MEDICAL BENEFITS
TO BUY MORE TOYS
"In the middle of a war, with troops and families vastly overstressed, recruiting already in the toilet, and retention at risk, the Defense Department wants to pay for weapons by cutting manpower and trying to cut career military benefits by $1,000 a year or more? That's just flat unconscionable. "
Veterans and Survivors
At the call of the Mobile, AL chapter of Veterans For Peace, military families and veterans from Iraq, Vietnam and other eras are marching from Mobile to New Orleans, together with survivors of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The marchers plan to highlight the connection between the multi-trillion illegal occupation of Iraq and the shameful and racist failure of our government's moral, economic, and political response to the catastrophe in the Gulf Coast.
The march, called "Walkin' To New Orleans," will start on March 14 and cover more than 135 miles in six days. Its arrival in NOLA on March 19 will mark the third anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, and coincide with thousands of local actions across the US calling for an immediate end to the occupation.
Marchers will demand real empowerment for Gulf Coast hurricane survivors and for the Iraqi people.
Marchers will demand the immediate withdrawal of all US troops from Iraq and, as they come back, decent health care, employment, housing and education for them, including Depleted Uranium testing and post-traumatic stress (PTSD) treatment.
Marchers will demand that the US government provide funds for all Katrina families to be reunited and returned to their homes, and that survivors have the right to plan their future free from the dictates of the corporations and their politician front men in Washington D.C. and on the state and local level, too.

Chuck Norris doesn't sleep
Chuck Norris doesn't sleep. He waits.
And he doesn't die, he feels no fear and the entire universe bows to his commands -- at least according to a couple of Web sites and a slew of mass-forwarded e-mails.
Norris, the karate master and former star of the TV show "Walker, Texas Ranger" and a bunch of action movies, is the subject of an Internet and T-shirt craze that rivals last year's Napoleon Dynamite mania. And nobody seems to know why. Especially not Chuck Norris.
"JUST THE FACTS

* The popular video game %u201CDoom%u201D is based loosely around the time Satan borrowed two bucks from Chuck Norris and forgot to pay him back.
* Chuck Norris is the only man to ever defeat a brick wall in a game of tennis.
* Chuck Norris can divide by zero.
* Chuck Norris is the reason why Waldo is hiding.
* Chuck Norris can set ants on fire with a magnifying glass. At night.
* When Chuck Norris does a pushup, he isn%u2019t lifting himself up, he%u2019s pushing the Earth down.
* Chuck Norris invented black. In fact, he invented the entire spectrum of visible light. Except pink. Tom Cruise invented pink.
* Chuck Norris is currently suing NBC, claiming Law and Order are trademarked names for his left and right legs.
* Chuck Norris counted to infinity...twice."
Natural Food, Unnatural Prices
In my experience, most people really liked working at Whole Foods for the first few months, blinded by the uniqueness of the store and by their hippie rhetoric of how we all mattered. But then people hit the six-month wall where they realize that it's all a bunch of BS, and Whole Foods is just like every other money-hungry corporation ... It's all a great, worker- and environment-friendly system until you get to the actual people working in the stores, stocking the shelves and ringing you up at the register."
A website created by the Madison organizing effort, wholeworkersunite.org, remains active as a gathering place for current and former Whole Foods employees critical of company policies.
Speaking Truth to Power
"I would first apologize to all the widows and orphans, the tortured and impoverished, and all the many millions of other victims of American imperialism." In that passage, Blum goes on to explain that he would end American support for Israel and reduce the military budget by 90 percent. "That's what I'd do on my first three days in the White House," Blum writes. "On the fourth day, I'd be assassinated."
TOO LIGHT TO FIGHT -- TOO HEAVY TO MOVE
Protecting troops is a top priority but mobility also is a concern, U.S. military officials said Wednesday. According to a Pentagon report disclosed last week, more complete body armour could have prevented or limited about 80 percent of the fatal torso wounds suffered by US Marines killed in Iraq. The Army and Marine Corps are rushing to buy and deploy improved body armor that provides more protection for the sides of the torso, a weak point in U.S. troops' body armor configurations. According to a Pentagon report disclosed last week, more complete body armour could have prevented or limited about 80 percent of the fatal torso wounds suffered by US Marines killed in Iraq.
Amerpie in the UK
Lou (AMERPIE) served in the US army in the 80's and is the grandson, son, brother and father of men who have served or are serving the military. He is a leading spokesman for Military Families Speak Out and Bring Them Home Now.
(This is a video of a talk I did in Manchester in late 2004 with Michael Hoffman of Iraq Veterans Against the War and activists from the UK and Iraq - Amerpie)
Every day military recruiters wonder the halls of our high schools. They portray the product they sell as some sort of college funding program or job training experience. It's lies. Unemploymnet is higher among vets than non-vets. Only 15% of those who enlist ever get a college degree. Listen to Objectors and militart refusers, not paid shills for the war machine.
Jaded by war in Iraq, deep-fried to a crisp in America
As with most of us who have worn a uniform and taken it off with our crtitcal thinking skills intact, this writer endures attacks from those who just can't imagine the legitimacy of informed dissent. I applaud anyone who demonstartes the morality this man does.
Robertson suggests God smote Sharon
Television evangelist Pat Robertson suggested Thursday that Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's stroke was divine retribution for the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza, which Robertson opposed.
(Real story, not from The Onion)
Children in Washington State are being given 'Patriotism tests' which are completely unrelated to their studies. The paper gauges whether or not the student shows fealty to the power of the state and whether the student believes in the right to overthrow a corrupt government.
We have covered several examples before where the government identifies a target group in society and canvasses their views on the nature of power and when that power goes too far. For example, in the 90's, American marines and national guard were occasionally asked if they would be willing to fire on American citizens in a time of crisis.
We are by no means against patriotism when it means love of country. Unfortunately however, the new brand of so-called patriotism translates as worship of government, and that definition is something that the founding fathers never intended.
No More Wasted Lives
(From His Father) At times like this, people say, "He died a hero." I know this is meant with great sincerity. We appreciate the many condolences we have received and how helpful they have been. But when heard repeatedly, the phrases "he died a hero" or "he died a patriot" or "he died for his country" rub raw.
After being sidelined for a game by a referee who ruled that he could not play because he wasn't wearing shoes, Bobby Martin, a senior noseguard at Colonel White High in Dayton, warmed up for a matchup with Belmont High. Martin, who was born without legs, was reinstated for the rest of the season by the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
Support for President Bush and for the war in Iraq has slipped significantly in the last year among members of the military's professional core, according to the 2005 Military Times Poll.
Pentagon propaganda program orders soldiers to promote Iraq war while home on leave
And the Army is cracking down on soldiers who go on the record opposing the war.
Specialist Leonard Clark, a National Guardsman, was demoted to private and fined $1,640 for posting anti-war statements on an Internet blog. Clark wrote entries describing the company's commander as a "glory seeker" and the battalion sergeant major an "inhuman monster". His last entry before the blog was shut down told how his fellow soldiers were becoming increasingly opposed to the US operation in Iraq.
"The message is clear," says one reservist who is home for the holidays but has to return and asked not to be identified. "If you want to get out of this man's Army with an honorable (discharge) and full benefits you better not tell the truth about what is happening in-country."
Marines Jail 65-Year Old Florida Man
"Why are scarce Marine resources being squandered on the prosecution of a senior citizen who's only 'crime' is refusing to fight a war that today is universally discredited? Or is the Corps warning Marines in Iraq that they will pursue deserters to the grave?"
