A prison inmate who had implicated a former Los Angeles Police Department officer in the shooting death of rap star Biggie Smalls has renounced his story, tying a new knot in the tangle of intrigue that surrounds the still-unsolved killing.

Waymond Anderson, who was briefly a top-selling R&B artist and is serving a life term for murder, said in a recent deposition that he lied about LAPD involvement in the Smalls slaying as part of a "scam" concocted by two other convicts to squeeze a large monetary settlement out of the city."

Just my humble opinion, of course, but it sounds to me like someone in the LAPD got to this guy...

A virus that has been linked to obesity in animals and humans works by converting adult stem cells into fat cells, making it easier to gain weight and harder to lose it, researchers reported this week.

At least 10 viruses and bacteria have now been shown to increase obesity rates, and the new study, presented Monday at a Boston meeting of the American Chemical Society, provides the first insight into how the viruses operate.

Once fat cells are formed in the body, she noted, they never go away. They can be shrunk, but they remain, waiting for a fresh infusion of fat so they can begin growing again.

If the results can be confirmed, Dhurandhar said, a vaccine against the virus could help reduce obesity rates in future generations."

A community media activist and law student at the University of Washington, Weisman hosts segments of a live show, which he sends over the Internet from Seattle to a public TV station in Amsterdam.

He is one of a growing number of people creating their own programming and putting it on cable, satellite and the Web as live streaming video. Along with expanding the reach of their signals, using the Internet as a distribution channel has the advantage of giving viewers the option of seeing archived TV programs on demand."

British and Spanish reporters claim to have traced the girl, pictured being carried on a Moroccan woman's back.

London newspaper the Evening Standard says the girl is a five-year-old from the village of Zinat.

The McCanns' spokesman said the news, if true, was disappointing. Madeleine disappeared on 3 May from a holiday apartment in Portugal."

From the page: "Former Police Officer Tim Stone doesnâ€t look like the kind of cop you want to get pulled over by when youâ€ve been drinking deep in Tennessee.

But youâ€d be wrong, because Stone feels your pain. He understands that the BAC is just a number and itâ€s each individualâ€s tolerance for alcohol that determines how ably you can drive a vehicle after ingesting alcohol. The Breathalyser, he asserts, is a very fallible device that can be fooled by an act as innocent as eating peanuts.

Just as many judges feel they have lost their power to actually judge people due to mandatory minimum-sentencing laws, many police officers secretly feel that the BAC has taken away their ability to use common sense and personal judgment on a case-by-case basis when it comes to who can and cannot safely operate a vehicle.

It was this frustration which spurned Stone, while still on the force, to release a video entitled: How to Avoid a DUI. The 50 minute video tells you exactly how to avoid falling prey to unfair drinking laws, all told from the point of view of the guy whoâ€s supposed to arrest you."
