"When Teresa, 41, of Brevard, North Carolina, posted her video called "Jeffrey Lee Lance/Dead Beat Dad!" it was with hopes that her ex would be inspired to spend time with their daughter, Jessica. "My father committed suicide when I was five," Teresa says. "So it was very important to me for Jeff to be in her life." Her video shows a faux newspaper with the headline "Dead Beat - Jeffrey L. Lance" set to the Everclear song "Father of Mine." The video goes on to show more pictures of Jeff, who Teresa says owes more than $12,000 in child support, a diabolically cute picture of Jessica, and flashes a listing of all of Jeff's kin, including their last names and hometowns. "
I was torn on this one... I'm torn on the entire system on this topic. While I definitely agree that all children deserve to be supported, I have seen the extremes that sometimes occur. For example, with my sister's ex... he had like five kids. He made decent money, but after all of the support was taken out, he was left with a couple hundred dollars a month... definitely not enough to support himself. Had my sister not been able to support him, he would not have been able to continue to pay for a vehicle to make it to work, etc. Now, this probably isn't the best example, 'cause that guy was a total jerk and deserved everything he got and more! lol But, it is true that this happens often. I have also seen how they get overwhelmed, when presented with a bill of thousands of dollars, and feel that there's no way to get the entire thing paid. While some of them try to pay what they can, they're presented with the threat of losing thier license, or even jail or prison, if they don't pay the entire thing, or if they fall behind, even if they have an emergency, or kids they are trying to support that live with them. Those kids are often not taken into account, so they miss out on the support, while the kids that aren't present get it.
On the other side of the issue, however, are the jerks who just don't think they should "have to" pay any support. The excuses of not giving money to their custodial parent for drinking, etc... blah, blah, blah. They want the easy road, and those jerks should definitely pay. I get support for Baylee, but it was only after fighting for it. The bad part is, I didn't even want the support, until the "sperm donor" started screwing with Bay. So, I said, ok, you wanna be dirty, we'll do it... DHS was supposively going to collect, but he would move out of his apartment in the middle of the night, and always works under the table, so he can't be found. He'll live with women so nothing's in his name. DHS doesn't want to spend the time or money tracking these fools down. Unfortunately, in cases like this, women don't realize that they can take matters into their own hands, and get things done a lot quicker and easier. With the power of the internet, we have more options than ever in tracking them down. I went to the law library, found the statutes and forms, did the paperwork myself, and filed against him for contempt for not paying. He had an attorney, while I represented myself. I saved myself a lot of money (and my son), while he paid for an attorney, who couldn't have done anything to help him anyway, and lost. He went to jail until he could come up with the money to bond out... which came directly to me.
In those cases, maybe these women fighting back on YouTube is a good idea. More power to them! They deserve help in supporting their children.
