The first woman to swim in Saudi

"I have to congratulate you, Madam, I think you are the first woman to swim in public in all Saudi Arabia!"

    I grinned. "A small revolution?" I asked.

"No a big revolution. I don't think you realise how big," he said, shaking his head in amazement.

For those of you not familiar with FOOC, or From Our Own Correspondent to give its full title, this is a fantastic starting point.

FOOC is a BBC Radio show recorded by the BBC's foreign correspondents and offers a more personal reflection on life in far-off places.

The FOOC transcripts are all updated onto the BBC News website, and you can get lost for hours reading about either the real stories behind major news stories, or simply some wonderful travel-journalism.

I know not many people click through onto text links, but anyone who enjoys travel literature, or even just has a curious mind, would be well served by checking this out before spending a while grazing the excellent writing here. You'd be a FOOCing idiot not to. :)

Sorry to be all political all of a sudden, but the government has put aside 29.5m GBP to 'police' the smoking ban in the UK. Given that there were only 11 infractions of the ban since it was introduced in Scotland over a year ago, how do they think this is money well spent? And to spend the money on undercover spies? Jesus, the UK is going to hell in a handbasket.

Just as a note from my own field of healthcare, the average cost (and I only know the Canadian figures) of outpatient treatment for a year for a mental health or addiction patient is about 10,000 GBP. So, your taxes can go to the anti-smoking sturmarbteilung, or to treating three thousand mental health patients? Just an example, but your call, of course.
