I like looking on the bright side. I relate very much to the Mediterranean extended-family, take-it-slow, money-isn't-everything outlook on life. I'm not a great cook but I like cooking, especially Mediterranean food. I'm interested in environmental issues. My main hobby is flying (on a PC simulator).

The people I admire most are those who see no end to pain, illness, grief or disability and who still retain a sense of humour, people who spend time making life better for others in any way, and people with toxic parents who have "broken the chain" in bringing up their own children.

    Congratulations, America!

What a night... it saw tears from Reverend Jesse Jackson (nobody saw mine, somewhere between 4am and 5:30am GMT), and other reactions from people of all ages, beliefs, colours and backgrounds, who have all had their say.

It also produced two of the most inspiring speeches that I have ever heard, one from Barack Obama, and one (very unexpectedly to me) from John McCain.

Barack Obama's speech will be remembered long after I am gone, as marking a day when America came of age and the world changed. If you haven't heard it (or have heard only edited highlights) please click any of these pictures for the full speech.

John McCain made the most gracious concession speech imaginable, possibly one of the best ever made by any politician. It wan't just gracious, though - for me it provided real hope for the future. It was as if the ugliness of politics had been lifted from him. Whatever your political colour, if you haven't heard the whole speech, please listen to it now.

From the outside it feels to me like a grey cloud has been lifted from the American people and from the rest of the world. Nobody, least of all the new President Elect, is promising an easy passage, but we finally seem to have a country where everyone can get on board and work together.

Congratulations again, America... you did good.
