SOME THINGS ABOUT STUMBLING THAT I WISH I'D KNOWN EARLIER...
- I wish I had started by reading XineAnn's Guide and PJA64X'S Tips for Newcomers. I would have done, if I'd known about them!
- If you want to report a bug to SU, how to do it is described here. SU hides this information near the end of the long list of other FAQs, because (reasonably, I guess) they want you to know about them before raising a bug report. I should have read those FAQs earlier, too!
- The date/time that appears at the beginning of each post is a permanent link. If you click it, or right-click it and go "copy shortcut", you will get a URL (web address) that is fixed and will always reach that particular post, even if the author edits the post and decides to change its date.
- The previous point matters if you want to hyperlink to a particular post in a blog. For instance, when you review a Stumbler and photoblog a picture, SU sets up a hyperlink from your review's picture to the page currently containing the picture that you photoblogged (page 10, say). The trouble is that a month from now, the post you are referring to might be on page 25, depending on how prolific that Stumbler is, but the hyperlink will still point to page 10! You might not care, but someone trying to track down information about the picture might. For a way around this problem, see here.
- If you link to a picture that is wider than 700 pixels, the picture will be compressed when displayed to fit that width. Unfortunately the browser's compression can mess up the picture somewhat, particularly if the picture contains hard lines and edges. It's better to take a copy of the picture, reduce its size with a suitable picture editor that does a good job of resizing/resampling, upload the picture to a site supporting hot linking (e.g. flickr or photobucket - I personally prefer photobucket), and link to that picture instead. Also, if the picture is taller than about 650 pixels you might still want to reduce it, just because it's hard to view a very tall picture (even using the F11 key). Just to confuse things, your picture link (img tag) should still be hyper-linked to the original source of the picture.
