Besouro (trailer)

This looks awesome. Finally, we capoeiristas can stop watching "Only the Strong."

I couldn't find any information on Besouro in English so, in the ancient tradition of amusing the myself, I will use Babelfish to render translated of awkwards (link):

Manoel Henrique Pereira (1895-1924), Besouro Mangangá or Besouro Cordão de Ouro was a capoeirista legend of the region of Santo Amaro, Bahia. Many and huge made are attributed to it. They said that it did not like the policy (that diverse times it was frustou trying to arrest it), that it had " body fechado" e that bullets and punhais could not feriz it. Certain made when Beetle worked in a plant, for not receiving the commanded one, it held the master for cavanhaque compelling to pay what he had to it.

The circumstances of its death are contradictory. It has versions of that it was in a confrontation with the policy, others of that was in " trairagem" , in one it has attacked of knife for the coasts. This last one is very sung and transmitted verbally in the capoeira. A farmer known for Dr. Zeca, after its Memeu son to apanhar of Beetle, laid an ambush ordering to deliver it a ticket to a friend who managed making the Maracangalha. Such ticket asked for so that its carrier was died. Beetle, illiterate, could not read that ticket was addressed to its assassin and clarified that the carrying one was the victim, thus in the following day when coming back to know the reply 40 soldiers was waiting Beetle. A man known for Eusébio de Quibaca made right a knife to it of tucum (or ticum) - a wooden type. Beetle would have been, then, esfaqueado with the such knife of tucum for the coasts.

An old man in a tan hat, tan raincoat and tan
pants stands in the student union park blocks,
quietly reading from a tiny bible to nobody in
particular. From time to time he looks up, and
his watery blue eyes dart around to survey his
environs, but nobody seems to be listening, or
even to see him. His quiet, passionless recital
continues sentence by sentence, with occasional
awkward pauses in between.

Leashed to the man is the most dejected-looking
yellow labrador, whimpering, her head sunk into
the grass in the very recognizable pose of dog
boredom. Her eyes also scan the park blocks,
and perhaps like the man's, they are searching
for some kind of attention. Unlike the man's eyes,
there is emotion there, sadness. There is nothing
in the old man's gaze, except perhaps fear.

Suddenly the dog gets up excitedly - some students
have sat down close to its limited range - but the
old man steps warily back, all the while wrapping
the leash around his hand several times. His Words
continue. The dog, for her part, paces around
nervously for a moment, then sits back down.

"WE PRAY YOU: Be ye reconciled to God,"
says one side of a sign the man clutches.

"The Truth will set you Free,"
reads the other.

Neither of these seems to apply to Dog.

This is a pretty awesome resource.

Just going off one page, I'm already having trouble deciding how to rename myself: Dogmanton or Flexhale?

I miss all three R's... reading, writing and reviewing. I've just been busy.

The good sort of busy, mostly.
The Floyds Coffee Shop "Border War" Saga

An incredible local story from the Mercury - shady landlords, midnight intrigue and coffee. Floyd's is a great place, too, by every account I've heard. Here's wishing them luck in their new spot... fifty yards away, haha.

This is a simple enough idea that seems like it would be very effective. I would like to see more of the numbers... 44 gigatons is a nice sounding one. While "offsetting" some equivalent warming effect does not mean reducing the amount of CO2 released, and CO2 emissions also need to be addressed in the long run, this is the sort of temporary solution that couldn't hurt!

Edit: nitsedy: It's true that there would be environmental costs, and those have to be considered. Paint isn't the only option, though - there are radiant barriers, types of clay, tiles, white shingles (which according to this page are 30° cooler than black shingles). You can also consider that cooler roofs are generally more durable, since they expand due to heat less - this means less frequent reapplication.

"Speaking at the 146th National Academy of Science annual meeting in Washington, D.C., Mr. Obama pledged to raise spending on research and development to more than three percent of the nation's gross domestic product, an increase of approximately $46 billion annually. 'This represents the largest commitment to scientific research and innovation in American history,' said the President."

Great news!

...a minor item in the new science budget will fund a dedicated group of pedants, who will re-raise awareness again for a second time more than once that, in mathematics, science and the English language, to iterate means "to repeat," and thus that reiterate means "to re-repeat."

Driving home this morning · Apr 28, 8:17pm

I was almost home when I noticed a crow in the street, and
slowed down to avoid it.

The crow hopped over to the curb and turned to watch my
progress, and I realized just then it had left something
shiny in the street.

It had rolled an entire can of food out.

I laughed, more out of surprise than anything else, and said,
"Good luck with that, crow."

As I turned onto my street, I thought about tire pressure, and
the dynamics of rolling over a full tin can. The crow, for all
I can guess, probably pushed the can into a better spot.
