Joy is a woman from LONDON, England, UK

http://www.YogaforBackPain.com

Joy Anderson has been a Yoga Practitioner for over 20 years and has worked in many diverse settings and locations, including HMP Wormwood Scrubs, Modesto Junior College, California and Different Strokes. She currently tutors at Morley College, The Light Centre, and runs a lively practice in her own studio, Joyoga Studio. She also facilitates courses in the workplace and organises tailor-made yoga holidays abroad.
As with many people in the healing profession, Joy's interest in yoga and bodywork was part of her own personal journey to rehabilitate a chronic back problem. She initially trained under John Stirk, Sophie Hoare and Mary Stewart who were pupils of Vanda Scaravelli.

After a successful rehabilitation, she went on to study a number of other forms of yoga including, Iyengar and, more recently, Ashtanga Yoga. Something she never dreamt she would do again was dance; now she regularly attends dance classes and has performed with salsa and samba dance companies. She has also studied Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais, Pilates and Polarity Therapy

Joy became a qualified masseuse in the late '80's and subsequently completed an Advanced Massage and Movement Course with Ken Eyerman (Danceworks)
Increasingly she found herself working with pupils, including those with special needs, who had experienced a wide variety of problems such as sports/dance injuries, chronic medical conditions including Repetitive Strain Injury and addictions. However, she realised that from her experience of working through her own problems, she started to attract many back pain clients. Over the years she's seen her pupils transform and has consequently decided to make Yoga for Back Pain her specialist area. She thanks her students who have ultimately been her best teachers.

"Having lumbered myself 6 months ago with Achilles tendonitis to add to my long-standing chronic lower back problems, I became a somewhat reluctant convert to yoga practice on the basis that 'something had to be done and there was nothing to lose'. Joy's class-based yoga practice finds me no longer a reluctant convert but a keen advocate! Downward dog sorted the tendonitis over time and the very doable range of poses, stretches and yoga breathing has fixed the back pain along with attention to posture in everyday situations. One night of slouching or sitting unsupported does allow the back to remind me it's still there, but at least I now have a way of addressing it through a few simple poses.

The toolkit has been great to sustain the effort out of class with the Summary of Positions in Module 3, being an ideal reminder and the Example Lessons an ever handy tool to use at home. I am very much looking forward to the voice-over version especially to help the breathing along. Attention to posture, weekly yoga classes and the convenience of the Yoga for Back Pain Toolkit have proved a solution for me, as well as providing an enjoyable and sustainable lifestyle change."

Coming to Joy's Thursday classes and introducing me to your teacher, Mary Stewart, made a difference to my physical wellbeing that I will always be grateful for. I'd always been really fit and played football and squash on a regular basis, however, about 15 years ago I developed an acute back problem that was so crippling, I couldn't even touch my toes. As for playing football -- well forget that!

At that time, just sitting still on a chair was a challenge. When you saw how much pain I was in, you encouraged me to come to your yoga class, but I was sceptical. However, the pain got so bad that I decided to give yoga a try. After all, I thought, what have I got to lose? One night, it was so bad, I decided, I would just turn up at the class.

I have to admit, initially, it was a real challenge. I couldn't do half the things that others in the class could manage. However, as I got to know the group, I realised that everyone had their own individual problems, and they encouraged me to keep at it.

It wasn't easy confronting my limitations, and it was hard for someone like me, whose buzz was high performance sports, to be patient in terms of results. However, Joy created an environment which was supportive and friendly and we learned how to help each other and had fun too. Over the years the class became a really important part of my life, and this was completely unexpected. To my surprise, I found myself wanting to practice on my own, and even to this day, I still practice and enjoy the benefits it brings.

Attending your Thursday class Joy, completely changed my life, for the better, and allowed me to return to playing high performance sports e.g. squash and football, which I still play today. It's a tribute to your teaching that you inspired me to take yoga into my life and make it work for me.

See how Linda got her life back after crippling sciatica. She was sceptical at first but now is a massive fan of yoga.

I didn't really have any serious back problems until I was pregnant aged 28, when I developed sciatica. All through the pregnancy I was in pain and limping. After my daughter was born things eased up for a short while but all that lifting and carrying a baby brought the problem back with a vengeance. I had constant lower back pain and pains shooting up and down my legs. One day when I was out the pain was so bad I couldn't walk and had to sit on the pavement till it eased off. I went straight to the local accident and emergency department. 'Mm' said the doctor, 'Sciatica'. 'So what do I do?' I said fully expecting some 'cure'. Bed rest was the only suggestion. Lie down..... a lot!

With two stepsons, a baby and a full time job that was out of the question. Then I started to talk to my sister Joy. 'Try coming to my yoga class' she suggested.
That was over 20 years ago and as the cliché says, I never looked back. I found that doing yoga each week kept all my symptoms at bay and for someone who was not athletic it was the kind of exercise I could manage. It also offered a fantastic feel good factor at the end of each session. I am a social work manager and I have always had a really stressful job, much of the time is spent sitting in meetings or at a PC. The feeling I got by the end of the class was indescribably wonderful. I would walk in tense, face set, restless, and walk out energised, relaxed and laughing.

Over the years I've also continued to use the exercises, whether I have attended a regular class or practiced at home to be my own back doctor.
Recently, after 3 massive stints at the computer I was in agony and couldn't think straight. Then I went home, got the mat out, a blanket, a heat pad; I laid on the mat, covered myself up and just breathed and stretched, stretched and breathed. After a while I was able to do more demanding exercises. All day I kept reheating the pad and intermittently doing the back exercises. I could feel my muscles uncoiling and the pain easing. After a good night's sleep I woke up and can you believe it, the pain had gone.

Over the years I haven't always kept up the discipline of going to a class, I've put on a lot of weight and done all the things you shouldn't do! But yoga has rescued me time and time again. Whatever else, I have gone each year on a yoga week and this has recharged me and helped me focus again. The great thing is I always know it's there and it's never failed me yet.

If it wasn't for Joy introducing me to yoga I would have been in really serious trouble. Since then I have recommended it to so many people and everyone I know who took it up has found it healing and life changing. So try it you've nothing to lose and so much to gain.
