Weddings for Wishes
By Ellen Rohwer, Guest Writer
Beyond the beautiful wedding gown, delicious three-tier chocolate cake and glitzy dance hall, couples are finding yet another meaningful way to celebrate their special day â€" contributing to charitable causes. In honor of this philanthropic movement, the local Make-A-Wish Foundation® chapter has created Weddings for Wishes, a program that invites bridegrooms to help make wishes come true for children battling life-threatening medical conditions.
Weddings for Wishes is a convenient and meaningful way to add a warm touch to your wedding celebration. Couples can donate in honor of their wedding guests or ask for contributions to the Make-A-Wish Foundation in lieu of gifts. Custom-designed invitation inserts, gift cards or place cards can be created for each couple featuring a special message notifying guests that a donation has been made in their honor, or requesting a contribution in lieu of gifts.
No matter how big or small, all donations will help grant the wishes of local children. For children like 7-year-old Megan, her wish has meant the world to her.
Megan, who has been undergoing treatment for leukemia, loves dogs. When her wish-granting volunteers from the Make-A-Wish Foundation asked what her one wish would be, Megan knew right away â€" to have a puppy of her own. Her volunteers searched for the perfect best friend for Megan and presented her new puppy at a special wish party. Family and friends gathered to meet Meganâ€s new puppy, Sugar, and to celebrate her wish come true. Megan's Make-A-Wish volunteers were able to secure doggie daycare, vet care for a year, and a local pet supplies store provided everything the pair could possibly need. Megan's wish party was appropriately deemed a "puppy shower"."
