Okay, it is time for me to weigh in on Hamas because this is getting way out of control. First of all, Dennis Ross is a neocon. That means he hates democracy, is an elitists, follows the philosophy of Karl Schmidt (leading lawyer for Nazi Germany and Leo Strauss' mentor of U of Chicago fame...the neocon incubator). This guy hates Arabs and is therefore also anti-Semitic since Semitism has nothing to do with faith and everything to do with race. He also wants to see the US rule the world by force, (under Israeli brain power) and believes in violence as a deterrent, (which is idiotic given that violence always begets violence). This is one of his many essays from the pro-Israel Lobby think tank, The Washington Institute.
On the other side we have Hamas. Hamas originated from the Muslim Brotherhood (est 1946 in Jerusalem) which covers both extremes from the Wahabi idea of a fundamentalist Muslim unity based upon Islamic law, (forced if necessary) to the completely non-political factions which abhor violence and think politics should stay out of religion. Hamas is in the Middle. With the outbreak of the first intifada in 1987, a faction split off and formed Hamas. The Israeli gvt saw a div/conquer opp & began funding and supporting Hamas clandestinely, led by Sharon of course, as a counter to Fatah (or Fateh depending upon which side of the pond you are). Mind you, this is SEVEN years before the 1st 'suicide' bombing, (of which the first should be considered Barach Goldstein's attack on the Mosque in 1994 where this Jewish terrorists raised in New York, slaughtered over 30 worshipers at prayer before the Palestinians killed him. He's a national hero in Israel today...so much for Israel holding the morality card).
Israel thought that by funding and nurturing Hamas, they'd effectively divide and conquer the Palestinians. This didn't work. Hamas proved to be true to their word, moderate and not out to destroy Israel or the Palestinians, (despite Israeli propaganda). Their sole objective is to force Israel out of the territory that nation has been illegally occupying, (and ratified as illegal by over 130 UN resolutions) so that the Palestinians can finally have peace, security and the ability to live...something Israel has denied the Palestinians beginning in 1946 with the bombing of the King David Hotel, through their ethnic cleansing of over 500 villages and 750,000 people in 1948-1949 and the subsequent re-do of the same ethnic cleansing, (always under the pretext of 'security') in 1967, (which claimed another 400,000 in displacement, terror and death.
Unlike Israel, Hamas has upheld its agreements. Unlike Israel, Hamas has stuck to attacking military targets, (please remember that military service in Israel is compulsory so most Jewish adults between 18-49 are either active or reserve military. As Dr. Ilan Pappe so eloquently stated in his interview with Jeff Blankfort this January, Israel is a military that happens to have a state. Never forget that.
Hamas' stated objective, and what it has always followed is to force Israel out of the land it has been occupying illegally. That and that alone. Given its actions and its objectives, despite Israel's claims and the US capitulation, Hamas is not a terrorist organization. What they do and what they advocate, whether we like it or not is legal under international law. Israel is breaking the law. Israel created this situation. Israel has never fulfilled a single agreement its made with the world going back to 1947 and Israel is the problem as the occupying power. Under international law, Hamas and the Palestinians have every right to fight Israel and Israeli forces by whatever means possible. They have every right to fire missiles, bomb, invade and 'terrorize' the nation that invades, subjugates, terrorizes, kills, destroys and enslaves them. Under international law, this is called resistance and it is exactly what you and I would do in the same positio
