But both these reasons - his genius and his tragedy - have been used as excuses by those seeking to have him freed. And, quite frankly, both reasons make me furious. They smack of an insular elitism that has nothing to do with justice and everything to do with power and privilege. How easy it is through the lens of time to say, "Oh, it was the 70s, everyone did crazy things." But going to a key party in bell bottoms and drugging and raping a 13-year-old are not the same. The former is a crazy thing, the latter is a despicable crime."
