Do you have a love-hate relationship with your co-workers? Well, then, you need "The Cubes" ... office/cubicle swag where YOU create the environment ... an office where YOU are the boss! Love to hate the IT guy? The woman who talks on the phone way too loud? The guy who's office always smells like McDonalds and he never bathes? How about the "consultant" who never leaves or the guy who's office has files, books, papers overflowing out into the hallway? Funnel off some of that frustration into constructive (but subtle) suggestions to those around you! Set "The Cubes" up to show your boss how you'd create the ideal office with the ideal people. Who knows, maybe there'll be a promotion in your future for being so creative. Great idea ... "The Cubes". I enjoyed a huge laugh when I found this on a website for the IT trade. (I think we've all given the IT guy a complex!) It picks up where Dilbert and "The Office Space" left off, AND, it's a tactile, hands-on approach to relieving workplace stress. Ditch the therapist, all you need are "The Cubes"!

I vaguely recall a study that noted that humans cannot deal with their circle of community if it extends much past 120 people. The study goes on to say that while we may feel compassion and empathy for an extended circle, we will only actively assist the first 120 when the chips are down because that's all the bandwidth we can muster. If each of us watched out for our communities of 120, it seems to me that there is enought bandwidth to balance out global inequities. One might feel that the rich are only going to get richer, and the poor get poorer -- that we are doomed to the War of Haves and HaveNots. I disagree. I see more and more altruistic action coming from the rich in my generation each year. These are people who get the importance of our global interdependencies. While I am far from financially rich, I have a lot to be thankful for. I do my part to "give back" to my community whenever I can. I look differently today at what my grandparents and parents went through in the Great Depression. It fundmentally humbled them and their generation, world-wide. I marvel at how they still appreciate life's simple pleasures. I didn't get that when I was in my 20s or 30s. With the pace of life today, just to chill for a day is a luxury. But, I challenge myself as to why I create this pace. I think we have more control over our pace than we think. In a similar vein, we have more control over our politicians than we think also (to wit: Nov 2006). We voted and by doing so we told them that it's time to "walk the talk". Hypocrisy can no longer hide in the ever growing transparent media. Moreover, we told them we cannot continue to "police" the world in the cowboy fashion we have been. I presume the election results were also motivated by the fact that we no longer wanted 70%+ of our taxes going towards an arrogant exercise in wastefulness. The world needs us to grow up and embrace our extended community without judgement or coercion. The internet has been, and will continue to be the conduit that level-sets us within the global village. It is an equalizer. I feel hopeful that humanity will move in the right direction. I also look forward to re-visiting these statistics regularly to see how we're doing. If you made it this far in my "Magnum Opus" ... thanks for reading. :-)
